The Common Room / Re: Could He Sign His Name - Or Not?
« on: Tuesday 10 March 09 13:20 GMT (UK)  »
I suspect that Galium is right, that if the official said "Make your mark here" they did just that -  perhaps it was a perception that just the mark was required, rather than the signature.  Even today, faced by officialdom, people tend to do precisely what they are told, usually on the assumption that the person issuing the orders knows what he/she is doing....

According to my late mother, my great-grandfather taught his wife to read and write after they married, but on their marriage certificate they have both used their mark, although he could have used his signature if required to do so.

As per my previous post, I would underline that I didn't know what I was doing when I first stumbled into the chatroom.  It was a case of joining RC and thinking "Hmm, I wonder what this button does..." and suddenly all these people were greeting me, and I was wondering what to do next.  But everyone was most patient with me and like JackieQLD, I really enjoy the immediacy of the response to my queries, as well as the good humour.

Census and Resource Discussion / Re: Are Ancestry.co.uk Searches that reliable?
« on: Wednesday 04 March 09 22:15 GMT (UK)  »
I must admit that I find it easier to search in FreeBMD first and then go into Ancestry for the census records, but perhaps that is because of my inexperience, having only recently joined Ancestry.  However  the searches seem extremely complicated in A*y, particularly when (for no reason I can fathom) I ask for census records and it insists on only offering me American ones; and I spend ages going round in circles trying to re-establish contact with the British ones.

I've found members in the chatroom extremely helpful.  All you need to do is to go in there and ask if anyone can help, and you'll be inundated with offers.  The other night they solved a brick wall for me that I'd spent hours trying to get through; they gave me all the necessary leads I needed within a few minutes, plus advice on what to do next.

Yes, people do chat on there, and very nice it is too.  Admittedly  it is a bit daunting at first - I was stunned when they all started 'saying' hello to me the first time I entered - but I think the chatroom is great fun, as well as a valuable resource.  Many thanks to all the brilliant researchers on there who do so much to help others' searches.

I used to be able to find my way around the site until they 'upgraded' it.  Now I'm not sure what I'm doing in there, and consequently seldom bother any more, which is a shame, because there's lovely stuff in there - IF you can find it!  Glad it's not just me who feels this way; was beginning to think I was losing it.....

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Help with reading a document

Sad that her husband died; or not, depending on the nature of the relationship, I suppose.  From the record, I can hardly visualise them sitting by the fire, he with his pipe, her with her knitting, and a nice pot of tea on the hob.

But at least we don't need to worry that she might have gone off the rails after his death, can we!!!  If you find out any more about here, I'd be really interested to hear from you.

Hi Minnie & Hiraeth - brilliant translation there H.  I have just been looking at it.  What a brilliant document.  Looks like Mary was some girl!  Hope she eventually got to enjoy her freedom.

Hi Minnie
I've tried downloading it & enlarging it, but the resolution is so bad that I can't get it into focus, sorry.

Oh, I'd forgotten about that story.  My father (who was born in Middlesbrough) took a great delight in telling that one!
