The Lighter Side / Thanks
« on: Sunday 19 February 17 23:30 GMT (UK)  »
Quite some time ago I asked help from RootsChatters on behalf of my friend who could not trace a baby born to great grandparents. A second baby had been given the name of the first so the first had died but we could not trace him.
To be brief -- it was a monumental spelling error in the register of deaths. Understandable  but not obvious until the names of all the Italian parents who had lost a baby in the set time span were compared re address , first names, Italian village where they were born etc.
Well Scotland`s People did all that and he`s been found. Whooping cough and Pneumonia at just about a year old and the new baby who was given the same name born just after.
I`d like to thank all who made helpful suggestions etc .
My friend phoned me with the news and it is just 20 year since she first started her search.
She was so pleased to find him.
Perseverance pays off !

Shropshire / Bromlow callow
« on: Saturday 30 July 16 00:56 BST (UK)  »
This ring of trees atop a hill is a well known landmark.

Various sources have it as a guide for drovers, when cattle and sheep were moved around the country to markets and fairs etc.
However I was told another reason many years ago , by the man I named as uncle , because I lived with his family as an evacuee- a courtesy title.
We were looking across the valley towards the callow, from Snailbeach> I asked uncle what it was and why the trees at the top.
He explained that during the first world war the landowner was felling the trees for the war effort, they were destined to be used as retaining timbers for the trenches and to prop up the tunnels
where mining to place underground bombs was happening.
Sadly his son was killed whilst fighting at the front and the landowner asked permission to leave the ring of trees at the top of the hill as a permanent memorial. This he was allowed to do.
I was told this in the early 1940`s but since then I have never heard this story told .

A couple of years ago we were visiting Bishop`s Castle and went into the delightful museum in The House on Stilts . I mentioned the story to two volunteers  on duty that day.
One lady knew the land owner and he had indeed lost a son in WW1. I can`t for the life of me remember the name of the  aristocratic landowner.

Has anyone else any info on this,?. It seems such a pity that the likely  reason for the ring of trees  has been forgotten.
Uncle who when he  told me the story would be in his late fifties, so born about1890 and would have perhaps been a soldier.
I would not like the story -if correct- to be lost.

Any help much appreciated. Viktoria.

Family History Beginners Board / Unrecorded birth
« on: Friday 04 March 16 20:29 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can clarify something--I am unable to trace the birth of a baby girl who only lived four hours. I have her death certificate and asked at the same time for her birth cert but was informed there was no record.
The little mite had no name ,just listed as Female ____age 0.
I thought it was illegal not to register a birth but there were dramatic happenings some days after her birth/death which seemed to be completely swamped by the subsequent tragedy.
A Dr.was called but did not arrive and the second one stated too long had elapsed for him to find a cause of death and it was a matter for the Coroner.
The baby girl seems to have become completely unimportant and forgotten in the dreadful death of her mother. No cause of death on the baby`s death cert, just" Not known", was it natural or did the mother do something????We will never know but it was early in the 20th century and times were very different. No benefits then!

The Lighter Side / Oriental script

I am consumed with curiosity, more so since the topic is  not being discussed but  were they Chinese or Japanese characters that appeared yesterday?Or even something else.
I posted a silly remark and perhaps ought not to have done , not having any idea what it was about .No offence meant- I was being facetious  and I hope I did not cause any.

Australia / family tree
« on: Friday 29 January 16 00:19 GMT (UK)  »
Am I allowed to ask if the descendants of a close relative  have been  included in a family tree?.
Despite me giving a deal  of  information  the last time I was invited to view they had not been and there were errors

The dates are way back so no one living.
I used to get emails and could view it but now I can`t get into it unless I join Ancestry in Australia.
She was sister to five brothers who all went1853 I knew nothing of them and the Australian descendants knew nothing of her She was my Great grandmother.
The person who has compiled the tree has been truly generous and I have done as much as I can but it seems a shame  my G.Grandmother and her descendants  were not fully and correctly included.

Technical Help / Windows 10
« on: Saturday 12 September 15 22:03 BST (UK)  »
I keep getting reminders to reserve  Widows 10-- I don`t like Windows 8 so wonder if I ought to accept the offer.
I believe Windows 10 is the last so will be continually updated I imagine.
Has any other RootsChatter changed to Windows 10?
I`d appreciate any advice.Remember that I am a computer idiot!

The Lighter Side / Did my ears deceive me?
« on: Thursday 07 May 15 20:46 BST (UK)  »
Listening to a programme on BBC2 yesterday, I heard the presenter say that the Beverley sisters sang with Glenn Miller ---- then a recording was played of what I would say were the Andrews sisters who were more likely to have sung with G.M.
I was in the kitchen so did not see if there was a photograph.
I think the Beverly sisters came along  a little later than during the war --?
Just curious   .Viktoria.

Technical Help / Fibre optic broadband
« on: Friday 13 February 15 19:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, as a real amateur, I was totally confused  when a certain well-known provider pushed fibre optic broadband at me when I had occasion to telephone them regarding a billing matter.
Today a parcel arrived------I`ve not opened it yet.
Can anyone explain please, in words of one syllable (or less!). I would be most grateful.
Please don`t overestimate my intelligence. Viktoria.
