Thanks Barbara, now I know what I am not. It amazes and shames me when the grandchildren come and and get on with home -work etc and whizz along and I am still using one finger. Never mind guess who they come to when they want their socks darning--- and their mother is my daughter- now if she was my daughter -in-law I could blame someone else!!I am getting like Queen Victoria-----liberal use of exclamation marks!--see what I mean,I`ll be getting delusions of grandeur. Thanks everyone, at least I know it is not me.I keep describing myself as a computer geek under the impression that a geek is an idiot because when I got in a mess I was advised to contact "the geek squad"so I thought the squad helped geeks ie people like me who were pretty hopeless with computers. I`ve just realised geeks are experts .Excuse me but I have just got an increase to my pension and it`s gone to my head.-- any excuse. Viktoria

Hello Boatgirl, I was faced with a similar dilemma-my mother`s sewing machine which my dad had bought for her some years before they were  able to marry had come to the end of its useful life--parts etc not  easily available but it was a nice bit of furniture. I`d have been lucky to get a few pounds for it but I gave it to The Sue Ryder charity shop. A collector saw it and paid over 100 for it and a vey worthwhile cause benefitted and I can`t think of a better way to dispose of a loved one`s possessions.I tried museums but did not get any further even though it was a very rare specimen.Try your local Heritage Society- they may have displays etc .Best of luck Viktoria

Hi Anne, we stayed at the little Hotel at Hooge which replaced the magnificent Chateau of the Baron Vink. The L Scottish cemetery is just nearbyand along   the Menin Road and there is another in the huge Hooge crater opposite the new chalet style  chateau .Capt. Chavasse is buried as I`m sure you know in the Brandhoek Military cemetery. The area was a field ambulance station. It is visited a great deal by people who go "V.C hunting"and as he  was the only person to be awarded both the M.C and V.C& Bar he is a real" trophy"The Bar was posthumus. Not too far away from Hooge are Bock  Farm and Berry Farm where one of Bury`s famous WW1 soldiers saw gallant action- Captain George Horridge 5th Battalion Lancs Fusiliers.I had the privilidge of teaching his G Grandson at School.Capt Horridge lived to a good old age.It is all so interesting and I think we must never ever forget.Viktoria

At a regimental dinner to mark the reopening by the Mayor of Bury the newly furbished officers` mess in Bury ( Lancs)has been dedicated to Capt. Noel Chavasse .His great nephew David Watson was guest of honour. The dining furniture once used by the WW1 hero in his own mess now takes pride of place in the Castle Armoury, home to the Army Medical Services.Thought this might be of interest to some RootsChatters.
