if you check the scan of the 1881 census then entry for George looks more like 11 than 4 and would a 4 year old be noted as scholar?

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q27P-6537

George shows as 29 on the 1901 census

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X9LY-3ZF

Possibly this family in Lymm in 1871?

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VBXL-TV9

Marriage 12 Feb 1866 in the parish church of Lymm
William Horman full age bach boatman Lymm father James Horman stone mason
Margaret Harrison 19 spinster Lymm father John Harrison labourer
witnesses Robert(?) Hewitt & Mary Miller, only Robert signs.

Birth regs
George Horman sept qtr 1870 Altrincham vol 8a pg 179 mmn Harrison
Hannah Allman march qtr 1874 Altrincham vol 8a pg 197 mmn Harrison
Elizabeth Allman march qtr 1880 Manchester vol 8d pg 274 mmn Harrison

Hannah baptised 8 May 1874 in Lymm daughter of William Allmond, boatman, & Margaret
Also Sarah Ann baptised 7 July 1872 daughter of William Allman, labourer, & Margaret

I know the 1901 census is correct because its my Grandmother Margaret Almond`s (B 1907) family (sisters and parents)

was any of this helpful, Pricey4848? You've been on the boards but there's been no reply.

Its been amazing and a little mind blowing...ive been working through it to try and make sense of it all so thank you all for your input......i think i stick to rigidly to exact surname spellings and dont make enough allowances for mis spelling in transcribing etc...

There are two Barnes/Benson births - 1863 and 1867.
Second Walter likely to have been named for the first one who died.

Thanks so the 1881 census showing Walter aged 15 living at 10 Eagle Street Ancoats could be same family of the Elizabeth Barnes Im researching who later marries a George Almond in 1894??

Because I had a Walter dying age 9 months in 1864 Id come to decision i must be looking at 2 different families but both with a Thomas and Emma as parents so thought i needed to start again fresh if that makes sense.....

I have found a death for a Walter Barnes aged 9 months and son of Thomas and Hannah in the St John district of Manchester buried 24/4/1864......this fits with Walter born 1863.....one of the previous posts made reference to a Walter Barnes marrying a Henrietta Phillips in 1892 so im thinking the adult Walter who marries isnt my Walter???

For reference :- 1881 census 10 Eagle St Manchester shows the children with ages..

Thomas Barnes   41
Emma Barnes   30
Hannah Barnes   21 born 1860.
Walter Barnes   15 born 1866
Elizabeth Barnes 5 born 1876
Mary J. Kellett   22 Lodger.

I saw that too but that would mean Emma was 9 when she gave birth to Hannah which is obviously wrong so assume Emma`s recorded age is wrong?..

In the 1911 census when Emma is 61 living with Elizabeth and George in Manchester it states she had 4 children and 2 died,,,I have Elizabeth and then Hannah / Walter as possible children...

What were the other years/places of birth for the children please to help with the search.

All the children were born Manchester as far as Im aware.
I have a Thomas Barnes marrying Emma Lockett in September 1875 in Bradford, Manchester ( not Bradford Yorkshire) as a possible.

I'm struggling finding relatives in the 1891 census.

Thomas Barnes B 1840 Manchester
Emma (Wife) B 1850 Manchester

Children:
Hannah
Walter
Elizabeth B 20/2/1876 Manchester
1 Unknown child

Thomas had died in 1894  when Elizabeth marries George Almond

Emma is a possible in 1901 census as Boarder in Manchester and definitely 1911 as living with George & Elizabeth again Manchester.

Just wondering where they were in 1901 as a family?

Ive found an Eliza Barnes aged 16 as Servant B Manchester but living down in Devon in 1891 census?
