Hi Marg,

Thanks for getting in touch. Since I started this post, I have discovered that my James Masson was born in Perth in 1792. He had 2 daughters who were born in Coull, Aberdeenshire and then his wife died. I've followed him through the Census in Coull and he doesn't appear to have remarried so it looks as if he was the last in his line.

Welcome to Rootschat  :)
I haven't found many people related to me through the Mitchell line so it's lovely to hear from you. My line descends from George's son William b1824 who married Anne Archibald.
I haven't found out anything else about George but I haven't been doing much family research recently. I do tend to believe that he came from Drumblade though. I have plenty of information on the Archibald side of the family which I can share with you. I can send you my email address through the Personal Messages (PM) once you have made 3 posts here.

Thanks for checking Josey...just knowing the general area is brilliant for me...it's much more than I knew this morning. We'll be able to drive/walk in the vicinity and take loads of photos. Had a look at Keppoch and Ruarach on Google street view and the scenery is stunning...can't wait to go  :)

Wow Josey, I think it must be Achnadhinrain...could see this easily being pronounced and written Auchindrean. You're a star, thank you so much  ;D

My sister and I are going to the area for a wee holiday in June which is why I'm trying to find out as much as I can before we go. I've loads of info on Ewen (my GG Grandfather) and his descendants and siblings but not much when I go further back. Ewen and his wife Jessie are buried at Clachan Duich so we'll be visiting their grave.

Yes that's what makes it so difficult...MacRaes married MacRaes and they weren't very inventive with their names either. I've been down the wrong path before  :)

Just to add that I've looked up Isabella's birth entry in 1833 and her one says "baptised with the Kirk of Kintail to Alexander McRae at Keppoch" However, there is another entry with the same baptismal place as Ewen which is a bit clearer ...definitely Auchin??? I'll crop it and add it.

I think I have them in the 1841 at Ruorach, Kintail -

MacRae, Alexander 32 born Kintail
MacRae, Anne 40 born Kintail
with children Euan (often spelt this way) age 9, Isabella age 7, Farquhar age 4 and Anne age 4 months all born Kintail.

I know from Ewen's death certificate that his mother was Anne MacLennan.
