Cheshire / Thomas Cartwright, killed by a train, Nantwich Station, 1875
« on: Thursday 11 November 04 14:10 GMT (UK)  »
What a wonderful web facility this is !

Two further investigations:

a)   My great great grandfather, Thomas Cartwright, of Nantwich, was killed by a passenger train at Nantwich Station on 12/10/1875, aged 46.

Where can I find out more about this – it must be recorded somewhere? What would the train have looked like? Was he the first fatality on the railway line in Nantwich? What happened to his wife, Elizabeth, after he died, because she seems to disappear from the census returns for Hospital Street.

b)   My great grandmother died in Nantwich Union Workhouse of ‘Alcoholic Paraplegia’ on 6/10/1893, aged 43.

This was only 3 years after my grandfather was born, and 7 months after her youngest son. As they lived at 2 Dog Lane, why would she have been in the Workhouse? Does  ‘Alcoholic Paraplegia’ mean that she drunk herself to death? Could this, perhaps, be a case of post-natal depression?

I would be most grateful if anyone could help.

Thankyou

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / 1871 Look up? Richard Spencer's family
« on: Wednesday 10 November 04 23:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to trace the family of RICHARD and ELIZABETH SPENCER. In 1881, they were living in Jachin Street, Cleckheaton, with their children: James (13), Eliza Jane (9), Sam (6) and John Richard (4).

I would be grateful if someone could identify the family for me in the 1871 census.

It would be absolutely fantastic if anyone could trace Richard Spencer (born c. 1834) back through the earlier censuses!!

Thanks

Does anyone have access to Parish Records or Baptisms for Nantwich?

My greatx3 grandad was born circa 1796 (died in 1873 aged 77 according to death certificate) in either Nantwich or Willaston. Have been trying to trace him (on and off) for around 10 years, so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Cheshire / WW1 Records : Thomas Cartwright of Nantwich
« on: Tuesday 09 November 04 22:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hello.

We live in France, in the Somme region in fact and I am trying to find out what my paternal grandfather got up to in WW1. Which battles he was involved in, etc.

I have tried the War Office, but like so many records, it is felt that his perished in the blitz.

I know he served in France and I have his 1914-15 medal. On the back is stamped 4504 DVR (Driver, I assume) T H CARTWRIGHT, RFA (Royal Field Artillary).

He was from Nantwich, so which Regiment would he have signed up to? The Cheshires? The Manchesters? And what exactly is the Royal Field Artillary? I assume they provided the pre-battle barrage, and I assume a Driver led the horses which pulled the guns, but it’s only guesswork.

And were the Royal Field Artillary attached to Regiments, or were they a separate body altogether?

In short, is there any way I can find out where he is likely to have served?

Can anybody help? ???

Thankyou

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Samuel Spencer, Leeds, 1893

Hello.

First, the story:

We live in France, in the Somme region in fact, and my wife (who is French) gave birth to our second child on Sunday (7/11/04). During her labour, the anaesthetist was chatting quite animatedly, and told us that his wife’s grandfather was English, and married and settled in France after WW1.

Neither he nor his wife speak English, but they are very keen on tracing their English ancestry, and asked if I could help. In the first instance, they want to trace their family line back, but of more importance to them is to trace any descendants of their English family who might be around today.

The anaesthetist’s wife’s grandfather was SAM SPENCER, born in Leeds, Yorkshire, on 3rd November 1893. His parents were apparently called JAMES SPENCER and ADA BARSTOW. Unfortunately, they have no documents to confirm spellings. It is also though that he had a sister called EVA who became a nurse.

SAM died in France on 12th September 1953.

I have looked on the 1901 census and the Yorkshire BMD index, but can’t find a match.

Can anybody help? ???

Thankyou
