Sussex / Henry Chase Edmunds
« on: Monday 03 January 11 20:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

Can anyone help with this Sussex query please

My great grandfather HENRY CHASE EDMUNDS born June 1840 in Wisborough Green and lived there throughout his working life, was reported to have 'died at sea' on 28th September 1874.
He was not in military or naval service and I can only suppose he must have died as a result of a sailing or fishing accident?
I can find no detail of this tragic incident, and hope that the event might have been reported in County Newspapers or records at that time?
I am assuming that as he lived in Sussex, he sailed from a Sussex Port

Kent / Apps in Kent
« on: Wednesday 17 March 10 12:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Kent researchers

Following a request from an Old Lady I have been following her Husbands Ancestors back through time (see Pettitt on the Suffolk Boards) and now she would like me to trace her ancestors who were Ag Labs and Shepherds in Kent.

This time the surname is APPS, especially in Brenzett where they were carpenters, Wheelrights and later became fishermen.

I understand that in Breznett churchyard there are a row of tomstones to the Apps family - does anyone have any names and dates from same please.

I have traced them back through time via the census returns, so that area is covered, so now am spefically looking for Parish Register entries to confirm these details.

Thanking you all in advance

Suffolk / PETTIT in Suffolk
« on: Tuesday 16 March 10 09:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Suffolk Researchers.

Whilst visiting me mam in her care home here in Hastings, I have got chatting with another old lady who would like to know more about her family Origins and I have agreed to help her.

What I have found out in the last 24 hours:

Her Husband (Eric Peter Pettitt) born in 1926, was one of 10 children of James William Pettitt and Annie Dean who married in the June Quarter of 1902 in Tendring, Suffolk.

Going back another Generation James William Pettitt (birth reg 1875) was one of 4 known children of George Pettitt and Belinda Jane Clark who were married in 1870 in the Reg Dist of Plomesgate, Suffolk

Another Generation back it would appear that George Pettitt (born 1845 in Butley) is the son of Robert Pettitt and Mary who married about 1840 and one of 7 known children all born in Butley, Suffolk

The last generation I have been able to connect to the above is Robert Pettitt born about 1816 in Butley, Suffolk.

Does any of the above look familiar to anyone and can anyone assist me with this research

Really appreciate your time

Graveyards and Gravestones / TOMBSTONES & SYMBOLS Website
« on: Thursday 18 February 10 10:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

Following some 16 years spent in the churchyards of Lewes and Hastings (but mostly Lewes) I have of late been constructing a web site to illustrate the kind of Motifs / Symbols to be found on Headstones and Memorials.
Although some pages are still in course of preparation; I think there is still  sufficient published to make it interesting:

Please take a look and let me know what you think, and is there anything more that could be included

Nottinghamshire / New Personal Website
« on: Friday 12 February 10 12:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Notts Researchers

I know I have had an archives website here in Sussex for a considerable number of years (www.rootschat.com/history/hastings) - but have never had a personal site up and running properly, so thought it about time that I did.

Over the last 24 hours I have put together the BASICS of a site dealing with my ancestors and Maythorn Silk Mill near Southwell in Nottinghamshire, from whence they came.
Would appreciate constructive feedback either on here or by Personal Message.  The address of my site is

http://maythornemill.webs.com

Looking forward to some interesting comments

Nottinghamshire / Frank & Edna Brooks
« on: Wednesday 27 January 10 09:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there

Does anyone recognise the couple on this picture please - it was taken on the beach at Rhyl in 1949.
I knew them as Uncle Frank and Aunt Edna and they kept a Fish and Chip shop in Billborough, Notts - supposedly a half brother to my father?
Uncle Frank was married twice with children from First marriage only - his second wife was called Edna. Believed to have moved from Billborough, Notts to Beeston, Notts to operate another Fish & Chip Shop.
I do not expect either of them to be still alive - they would both be over 100 if they were (Frank was supposedly born in 1910)
Any help to trace relatives of Uncle Frank & Aunt Edna would be appreciated
