Dorset / Luffman Family in Dorset and Somerset
« on: Tuesday 30 December 08 19:35 GMT (UK)  »
During the 18th century the Luffman family lived in the Dorset villages on Oborne,Sherbourne,Stourton Caundle, Purse Caundle,Gillingham and the Somerset parishes of Henstridge, Milborne Port, Cheriton (N&S) Charlton Horethorne, Horsington, all of which were owned by the Digby family of Sherborne Castle. Does anyone know whether they were in service to the Digbys, or rented land from them as tenant farmers? They are often described as Yeomen in the Parish registers

Have Loveless in the extended family tree (Berkshire 1930s) don't know of descent from TPM. Also have convicted Swing Rioter in the tree from 1830s of which I'm quite proud, together with two transportees to Australia.

Lincolnshire / Stanton of Rippingale and Heckington

Edward Stanton b Rippingale c1741 moved to Heckington where he married Mary Baxter believed b Heckington. Any information on these families particularly Stanton at Rippingale would be very welcome. Both families seem to have been wheelwrights whilst at Heckington.

Thanks for that MJB. Though I shall certainly pursue that with the early 20th century one, name Stim(p)son Wisbech Cambs 1900-1910 approx; I don,t expect much success with the other one, Wiltshire 1562 approx. Unless someone knows otherwise.

Travelling People / Village Carriers

Several of my father's ancestors on both sides were shown as village carriers or carters. Would they be classed as travellers. So far as I know they had adresses they used as a base.
