Ebenezer Guthrie's wife, Mary Ann Land, was born Feb. 2, 1805, so Mary 25 is not his wife, unless the 25 is not her age, but some other marker. I believe Mary 25 is the daughter of Ebenezer Guthrie's father's brother, Ebenezer Guthrie's uncle, whom has yet to be identified.

Now, the more I think about Mary 25 the more confused I get. Mary 25 is someone's daughter, I know..

Wouldn't the 25 year old Mary on the 1841 census be Ebenezer's wife?

I thought that the Mary who is 35 on the 1841 census MAY be Ebenezer's sister, but I have no way of proving this - it's just a guess.  ;)

Ages on the 1841 census are often not exact - explanation here:
http://www.british-genealogy.com/resources/census/cen-contents.html

I will be very interested to see what elin discovers at Leeds Library.  :)

PS. I forgot to mention that the 1881 census is also available on familysearch:

I'm stumped, now. We see Ebenezer Guthrie in Hunslet in 1806. We then see him in Armley in 1851, grown up, married, and with his family. I'm thinking that he was baptized somewhere close to Leeds, if not in Leeds. I am not familiar with the IGI documents, and I don't know how big an area they cover, so I have no idea of the challenge presented with looking at all towns close to Leeds, between Hunslet and Armley, and including Leeds.

According to this, the christenings for Hunslet are covered on the IGI:

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/Misc/CBW/WRY/Hunslet.html

But I can't see Ebenezer  :-\ ....

Perhaps he was christened elsewhere.

Thank you for gathering all this information and posting it here. I am sure others interested in Guthrie genealogy will find this very helpful.

I am wondering if Mary 25, listed in the 1841 census, is a niece of Ebenezer Guthrie. Perhaps a brother's daughter? Ebenezer's sister Mary would have been 38 years old in 1841. If she were in Alexander Ritchie's house in 1841 then her age is wrongly listed on the census, and Mary 25 is not Ebenezer Guthrie's sister. I find this intriging...

I see what you mean when you say you can't find Ebenezer Guthrie's sister, Mary, on the 1861 census. I am sure you are correct when you say she died in 1860 at 57 years old. Dec. 1860 9b 161 is her death notice. Is Dec. 1860 9b 161 a document that can be copied?

Goodyear is a well known name, and, I didn't know Guthrie  was associated with it. Is Dec. 1863 Leeds 9b 583 a document that can be copied?

The rest of the information seems to be very straight forward, ages, dates, and people seem to correspond as far as I can tell.

You have done some outstanding research on this request, and there is nothing I can say that that accurately protrays my graditude for all the work you have done. Thank you so much....

Hi Reid Guthrie,

Thanks for unlocking this thread.  ;) I know you have the census for 1851 and 1861 but I will post them plus the others I found in case anyone is interested:

1841
HO107/1342/38/22
Dunkirk (?) Hill, Armley
Ebenezer Guthrie 35 Machine M
Mary 25
Thomas 7
George 4
Mary 1
(all 'Yes' born in county)

I wonder if this is Ebenezer's sister Mary in 1841:
Park Square Leeds HO107/1364/9/9
age 35, a FS in the household of Alexander Ritchie, a merchant

1851
HO107/2314/538/8
Low Fola, Leeds
Ebenezer Guthrie head wid 45 machine maker b Hunslet
Thos Hick Guthrie son 17 engine maker b Armley
Geo 13 son feeder woollen mill b Armley
Mary daur 11 at home b Armley
Benjn son 8 b Armley
Mary sister unmar 48 housekeeper b Hunslet

1861
RG9/3351/144/15
Low Fola, Leeds
Ebenezer Guthrie head wid 55 general mechanic iron b Hunslet
Mary daur unmar 21 b Armley
Benjamin son 18 iron turner b Armley

I can't see Ebenezer's sister Mary in 1861. Perhaps she died. I found this death which may be her:
Dec 1860 Hunslet 9b 161

1871
RG10?4539/13/22
Greenwoods Cottages
Wingate(?), Armley
Edwin Goodyear head mar 32 woollen warehouseman
Mary Goodyear wife 31
Mary A daur 6
John W son 4
Amy daur 2
Ebenezer Guthrie father in law wid 65 general mechanic b Hunslet
(all Goodyears born Armley)

So it seems that Ebenezer's daughter Mary married Edwin Goodyear. This may be their marriage:
Dec 1863
Leeds

I stand corrected, it must have been the 1851 census that I noted that Mary and Ebenezer Guthrie were born in Hunslet on 1803 and 1806 respectively, not the 1841 census. Thank you for correcting me on that.

Welcome to rootschat Reid Guthrie!

I think you must mean that the 1851 has them as being born in Hunslet, and the 1841 only says whether or not they were born in the county.  ;)

I take it you have Ebenezers marriage?
Ebenezer Guthrie = Mary Ann Land
25 Dec 1832
St Peter
Leeds

I hope someone with the appropriate records will be along to help you find their births soon.

Ebenezer died in 1875, in Leeds. He was 69 years old at the time of his death. Thank you for verifing his death. Mary Ann died in Nov. 1842, so I don't know whose death was recorded in Dec. 1860? Do you have any names listed with this death on Dec, 1860? Your efforts are much appreciated, thank you for taking the time to do this.

Ebenezer is a widower by 1861. This may be Mary Ann's death registered Dec 1860:
Leeds
9b 259

This looks like Ebenezer's death registered Dec 1875:
age 69
district Leeds
9b 304

Thank you for replying to my post. Ebenezer Guthrie was born in 1806, Mary Guthrie was born in 1803. The archives at the Leeds Central Library have never been searched, as far as I know, for any information about Ebenezer or Mary Guthrie. I don't know if it will help or not, but, family names are , Thomas, Hannah, George, Mary, Elizabeth, and Ebenezer. You are so kind to do this for me, thank you.

Hi Reid Guthrie,

I'll see if I can find anything in the archives at Leeds Central Library next week, unless
somebody finds what you need before then.

Is it Ebenezer born in 1806?

Elin

Thank you for taking the time to look up the marriage of Ebenezer Guthrie to Mary Ann Land on Dec. 25 1882. I know your time is important, and I want you to know that I really appreciate your efforts. I have that date duly noted.

I am trying to find the parents of Mary, and Ebenezer Guthrie, born in Hunslet, England, a suburb of Leeds, in 1803 and 1806 respectively. The 1841 census lists them as being born there, but it does not show their parents. Can anyone please help me?

I am trying to locate Mary, and Ebenezer Guthrie's parents. They were born in Hunslet in 1803 and 1806, respectively.  Is there a church directory, a city directory, a baptism listing, a birth certificate, or something along those lines that would have their parents names on it?
