I`m trying to decipher the 1841 entry for Thomas Boardman (born approx 1791) in District 3, St Mary, St Marylebone.  He`s the last entry on the first page.  It looks like some sort of institution but I can`t make out any of the descriptions. Any help would be much appreciated.

Kent / Re: St Mary, Northgate, Canterbury

Thanks Betty - I was clutching at straws rather!  I don`t where the child`s mother came from so maybe her family was in Canterbury and she was with them whilst the father was away at sea.  The reason we think he was in the Navy is that there is a chap with the right name and about the right age in the Greenwich Hospital for Seamen in 1841 and 1851 and the `baby` who was born in Canterbury was also living near Greenwich then.

I`m concentrating on direct ancestors, but do get a bit side-tracked at times if I notice anything interesting!

I have an ancestor who was baptised at St Mary Northgate in 1812.  I`ve read that this church was popular with soldiers from the nearby barracks but is it possible that it also had links with the Navy?  I think my ancestor`s father was in the Navy, was born in Lambeth and spent his later years in Greenwich, so  I`m trying to work out why his son was baptised in Canterbury.
Many thanks         Jane

thanks Stan - I`m afraid I didn`t know how long ago Universities started to confer degrees, or if someone could just call themself a Doctor for the sake of appearances!  Do you think I could find out any more about this?  My ancestor spent most of his life in the Clapham area

Occupation Interests / Doctor of Music
« on: Friday 22 May 09 14:51 BST (UK)  »
I have an ancestor whose occupation in 1841 (when he was 29) is `organist` but in 1851 and 1861 his occupation is `Doctor of Music`.  Is this just a rather `posh` way of descibing a music teacher?  Or is he likely to have had some sort of qualification which would have entitled him to call himself a Doctor?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
