The Lighter Side / Slow Certs delivery
« on: Sunday 02 January 11 11:23 GMT (UK)  »
I live in Ireland, after deserting England for a quieter life.

If I order certs from the GRO, they generally take 7-8 days to arrive. (I am OK with this.).

10 days before Christmas I did a bit of online shopping at Amazon.   It was a large item, but arrived in under 3 days from time of ordering it. :o

Perhaps I should order my certs boxed up. ;D

The Common Room / Are Baptisms reliable. Discuss.
« on: Wednesday 01 December 10 21:02 GMT (UK)  »
Whilst hunting down relatives using various tried methods.   I have usually taken the year of baptism as an approximate years of birth.

However.  I have since found that quite a big lump of one family were baptised in one 'job lot'.   The oldest sibling being 12 years older than the youngest sibling.
These occured in 1870.  Obviously I had the census to help me out with ages, so on the strength of those I ordered certs.
If we get back to baptisms in earlier years, say 1750's.  Any given child could have been born 10 years earlier, considering what I have since found out in 1870
So when looking for marriages, an assumption can be made that the particular person could only be 10-12 years old at marriage given the baptism year, and discard the marriage.

So how do you sort it out, if the marriage found is the only feasible one, if the baptism is right as well. :D

« on: Tuesday 16 November 10 12:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, I'm at a complete dead end looking for this fella's parentage.

1861 census. Thomas Burzess  1844. Northwick.  Lodger in Farnworth and Widnes.
1871 census. Thomas Burgess  1844. Northwich.  Boarder in Altrincham.
1881 census.  Thomas Burgess  1845. Northwich.  Attendant/Plasterer. in Prestwich.
1891 census.  Thomas Burgess  1844. Northwich.  in Altrincham.
1901 census.  Thomas Burgess  1844. Witton.  in Altrincham.(Dunham Massey).

Married Mary Ann Graham in 1867.Dunham Massey.
Informant on father in laws death cert in Dec.1881
Occupation of Plasterer/Master Plasterer on his marriage cert, and his son's Joseph Graham Burgess birth cert and marriage cert.
Have not found him and family in 1911.  Too many possible deaths to follow him up on.
Father on his marriage cert is Joseph Murry. Occ.Labourer. And no trace of him either.
Purchased all certs for the area of his birth, and no luck.

Any ideas anyone.

Buckinghamshire Lookup Requests / William Stevens c1801 (Monks Risborough)??
« on: Sunday 31 October 10 13:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have William Stevens c1801  marrying Rebecca Rogers/Rodgers in 1823. Monks Risborough, Buckinghamshire.

In 1841, they are living in Meadle, Monks Risborough with 9 of their children. And Williams y.o.b is given as 1806

In 1851 they are living in  Monks Risborough (Redland End) minus Rebecca. (Dies 1844).

I am trying to find William Stevens(1801) parentage, and most leads head towards Dinton, but nothing confirmed as yet.

Thanks.

Steve. :)
