Travelling People / Burnside family
« on: Saturday 30 May 20 19:27 BST (UK)  »
10 years ago. I shared many exchanges here with very helpful people regarding the Burnside family and my interest in Mary Burnside of Guisborough born 1831 (daughter of Edward and Sarah). Just wondering if any of those people are still using this forum.

Hello

I wonder if anyone has access to Evening Gazette archives.

I am seeking further information about the death of James Coates of 46 Cockburn St, Lingdale on 4th Sept 1942, as a result of an accident at North Skelton Mine. The death cert says inquest held 4th Sept and by adjournment on 16th Sept, the death cert was issued on 18th Sept.

I can find nothing online and I am too far away to use Teesside archives.

Many thanks for taking the time to read this.

Julie

Travelling People / Help please re travellers in North Yorkshire / Durham
« on: Saturday 05 December 09 17:44 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help regarding the current scavenger hunt. We are looking for some apparently untraceable ancesters who appear to have connections to a family of hawkers by the name of Burnside, based around Guisborough and in Durham.

Particular interest is in the names SMITH (Mary b c1831 and Joseph b c 1857). BRADLEY, BURNSIDE or BURNSIDES and LEATHER.

Any help regarding explanation of name usage and changes is appreciated.

I wonder if anyone can help.

My ancestor Mary Ann Smith later Grout seems to have untraceable origins.
She was born possibly in Guisborough 1831-9. The 1901 census says 'Eggevan' - I can find no such place and wonder if this is a mispronunciation of Hovingham.

She is not apparent on the 1841, 51 or 61 census.

In 1871 she has a 3 yr old son called Joseph Smith, who is given as born in Guisborough, but no record of his birth or baptism is found.

On her marriage certificate she gives her father as John Smith

She has associations with a family called Burnside or Burnsides who are mostly hawkers and some of whom come from Hovingham.

There is a Mary Burnside who is in Guisborough in 1851 but not found later and there is no obvious marrage.

There is also Mary Bradley in Guisborough in 1861 with a 4 yr old son called Joseph. I can't find a marrage or a later census record. Her husband is James Bradley born in 'Ovingham'.

This is quite a conundrum and I wonder if all three Marys could be the same person. If anyone has any links, information or suggestions, I'd be delighted.
