Kent Lookup Requests / Henrietta Burt nee Odd/Hodd Death or Other Info?
« on: Wednesday 29 July 09 15:16 BST (UK)  »
Would welcome any help in figuring out when Henrietta Burt nee Odd/Hodd died.  She was born in Bexley in 1855 to William Hodd and Rebecca Ann Stevenson.  She married John William Burt in Dartford in 1876.  I've located her and the family on the 1881, 1891, 1901, and 1911 census.  In 1911, she lived with husband John and children Arthur, John, and Albert at 5 Ash Place, Bexleyheath.  I believe that husband John William Burt died in 1923.  I have searched in vain and not found any information about Henrietta after 1911.

Any thoughts on when she died or where the two of them could be buried would be very helpful.  Thanks in advance!

London and Middlesex / John Pratt b. 1801
« on: Friday 12 June 09 23:03 BST (UK)  »
Looking for any information or suggestions for how to go about finding information about John Pratt born approx. 1801 Lewisham (which I believe was London at the time, correct?).  Don't know names of parents.

Don't have any information until 1841, when he lived in Farningham, Kent with his wife Sarah nee Salmon.

He died in 1873 in Dartford, Kent.

Thanks in advance!

Kent / Newbie Researching Salmon, Packman, Back, Jewiss, and Best in Kent
« on: Friday 12 June 09 22:46 BST (UK)  »
Hello -

I just started thinking about the people in my tree from the early 1800s in Kent.

Sarah Salmon b. 1805 Horton Kirby to William Salmon and Sarah Read

William Packman b. 1816 Eynsford to Thomas and Ann Packman
m. Esther Back b. 1816 Eynsford to Henry Back and Catherine Page

Simon Jewiss b. 1814 Dartford to unknown
m. Mary Ann Best b. 1814 Northfleet to Edward Best and Amey Fielder

Let me know if you share any similar interests in these people.  I have census reports for most and some baptism, marriage, death information.  Very little information about all of their parents though.  Simon Jewiss is my biggest mystery so far, so I may post some separate questions about him soon.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Lanarkshire / Isabella Adam - Inhabitant of 31 Bank Street?
« on: Friday 27 February 09 04:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi -

I am trying to track the daughter of Isabella Erskine nee Simmonds (first husband James Robertson).

I believe the signature on Isabella's DC reads "I Adam" - daughter.  This was in 1973.  Both mother and daughter are listed as having lived at 31 Bank Street.  Is there any way to find out who lived at this address in 1975, 1980, etc.?

This daughter is quite a mystery.  I obtained Isabella's obituary in the hopes that the daughter's name would be clearer - all it says is daughter "Bunty," which appears to be a pet name.

My grandfather supposedly had a sister born before him (he was born in Milton in 1921 to James and Isabella Simmonds).   His mother left with his sister when he was quite young; I have no clue if the daughter went by Simmonds, Robertson, or Erskine prior to her marriage (it is rumored she married someone in Malta during the war).  When I search SP for Isabella Robertson b. 1915-1922, I get three names.  One of these is Isabella Johnst. Robertson b. 1918.  Interestingly, when I search SP for Isabella Adam d. 1973-2006, I find an entry for Isabella Johnst. Adam other surname Thomson b. around 1920, d. 1998, Turriff, Aberdeenshire.  The other Isabella Robertsons born around 1920 don't seem to match with any Isabella Adams.

Any tips regarding the address or the problem in general?  Thanks!

Perthshire / Catherine Buchan nee Guthrie
« on: Thursday 12 February 09 02:28 GMT (UK)  »
Would anyone be able to help me locate a marriage or death record for a Catherine Buchan nee Guthrie?

I believe she was born in 1811 (Katherine) in Dunbarney, Perth to William Guthrie.  She likely married James Buchan some time before the birth of their three children - James (1836), William (1838), and John (1840).

I'm running into some trouble with her in the context of a daughter of James Buchan, Jane Buchan.  Jane's marriage record for 1865 says she is the daughter of James Buchan and Catherine Buchan nee Guthrie.  Jane's death record for 1924 (Jane Cattanach) says she is the daughter of James Buchan and Janet Buchan nee Guthrie.

I have a 1841 Scotland census for James, Catherine, James, William, and John Guthrie.  I have a marriage record for James Buchan and Janet McAra in 1842.  And then three births for James and Janet - Jean (1843), JaneT (1844), and Mungo (1850).  I have a 1851 Scotland census for James, William, John, Jean, JaneT, and Mungo.  Janet McAra isn't listed, but there are other McAra family members on the same page.

If Catherine died between the June 1841 census and James' marriage to Janet McAra in 1842, that would probably confirm Jane as the daughter of James and Janet...not of James and Catherine Guthrie or James and Janet "Guthrie."

Thanks in advance and sorry if this explanation is confusing!  Let me know if any additional details would be helpful - I have most of the sources for these facts handy.

Wiltshire / John BURT b. 1845-1847 in Salisbury?
« on: Wednesday 04 February 09 20:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All -

Looking for any information about John Burt.  Have no knowledge of his parents, siblings, birth, etc.

Have 1881, 1891, 1901 census reports from when he lived in Bexley, Kent with his wife Henrietta, who he married 1870-1874.  She was born in Bexley...so they likely married there, but I have no idea.

All of the census reports list Wiltshire as John's place of birth - one says Salisbury.

He is listed as having been born in 1845, 1846, and 1847 on them.  On one the last name is spelled Birt.  His occupation was agricultural labourer.

Would appreciate any tips.  Thanks!

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Henrietta Burt/Birt nee Oldney
« on: Wednesday 04 February 09 19:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All -

Looking for some help to figure out anything about Henrietta's parents, siblings, birth, etc.

Right now, I have 1881, 1891, and 1901 census records for her under her married name, Burt (as it appears on two) or Birt.  I believe Burt is the correct spelling.  She had her first child with John Burt in 1874, so I would assume they were married a year or so before that (or around that time).

Each census report gives a different year of birth for Henrietta - 1853, 1852, 1854 in that order.

All, however, say she was born in Bexley, Kent.

The last name Oldney has been given to me by family members; I have yet to find any confirmation that it is her true maiden name.

Any help or tips to point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Perthshire / Robertson Payne Children
« on: Tuesday 03 February 09 15:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All -

Trying to find out more about the half siblings and step mother of my grandfather, James Robertson.

He was born in Glasgow on Dec 21, 1921.  His parents were James McDuff (or MacDuff) Robertson and Isabella Simmonds, who married on Oct 8, 1920 in Glasgow.  James McDuff was born on Oct 18, 1899 in Perth, Parish of Little Dunkeld.

James McDuff and Isabella divorced in 1938-1939 according to the NAS.  By looking at his death certificate, I have learned that he remarried to a Jean Christian Payne.  I believe he had moved back to Perth by this time.  When he died he lived at 11 South William Street, Perth.  They had four children according to their obituaries (in the Perthshire Advertiser and Courier), Jean, May, Martin, and John/Johnny (no last names provided).  I believe Jean Christian Payne was married to someone with the last name Pederson before marrying James McDuff.

At any rate, I have no details about when James McDuff and Jean married and nothing about any of their children.

Would appreciate any tips you can provide!  Thanks!

Lanarkshire / Help with Charles and Isabella Erskine?
« on: Saturday 24 January 09 21:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All -

I'm looking to find out more about my great grandmother born on Sept 21 1894 as Isabella Simmonds.  She was married to James MacDuff Robertson (my great grandfather) for a brief period of time around the 1920s.

I have obtained her death certificate and she went on to marry Charles Erskine (a watchman), who was born in 1879.  His parents were William Erskine and Anne Ramsay Grant.

Charles died on May 7 1949 in the district of Fossil Park, Glasgow.  Their address at the time was 37 Scone Street, Glasgow.   Charles was apparently married to two other women before Isabella - Helen Scott and Helen Barr.

Isabella died on Feb 23 1973 in Glasgow.  The informant on the death record is daughter, whom she lived with at 31 Bank Street, Glasgow.  I can't make out the name of the daughter.

If you have any suggestions about the identity of the unknown daughter, finding out who else lived at the 1949 and 1973 addresses, where they could be buried, or possible newspapers containing obituaries I would greatly appreciate it.  Thanks!  If there is other info on their death certificates that would be helpful to know, please tell me.
