Technical Help / Re: RootsMagic 8
« on: Thursday 23 June 22 17:56 BST (UK)  »
maidmarrion does this help:
In the File tab of RM8 select Create a New RootsMagic File (the first option). This will open a new window where the second option is Import from RootsMagic 1-7 … This will then open a further option where you select the first option (RootsMagic Versions 1-7). This will create a new RM8 database file with the *.rmtree file extension. Your RM7 (*.rmgc) file will remain as it is, where it is. It is not overwritten and you can still open it in RM7 if you so wish.

Be advised that RM8 still has problems for some users. There are still some features in RM7 not yet implemented in RM8 so you would be wise to continue using RM7 as your production database and
use RM8 as a learning tool until you become familiar with the changes to the program.
You might find that there is more 'mouse clicking' than you are used to.

The Common Room / Re: Marriage of minors
« on: Wednesday 22 June 22 13:26 BST (UK)  »

Marriage age was 14 for a male and 12 for a female providing that the consent of parents or guardians was obtained for those below the age of 21.
By an Act in 1929 this was changed and 16 became the age for both parties still with parents consent if under 21.

Technical Help / Re: LibreOffcie Writer help please

The backwards 'P' is called a pilcrow and is used when you want to edit a document.
It shows new lines, spaces between words and new paragraphs.
You can turn it 'on and off' from the toolbar in writer (Backwards P icon).

The end of a paragraph is also the beginning of the new (next) paragraph.

Non of these characters are printed. They are only used for visual editing.

Does this help?

I'm wanting to start uploading some of the birth and death certificates I've purchased from GRO onto Ancestry

First and foremost you should read the T&C's before deciding to upload anything to any website.
Copyright subsists in ALL BMD's issued less than 75years by the GRO.

There is nothing stopping you TRANSCRIBING the details from these BMD's into another document and uploading those if you wish.

Good luck with your project.

Have you tried...

Open FTM and at the top of the screen where you have FILE, VIEW, EDIT etc.
open FILE & select copy/export and then select file type and change it from FTW (*.ftw) to GEDCOM (*.ged).

Does this work?

Jim

PS You could ask at Rootsmagic they are very accomodating.

The Lighter Side / Re: Burial details
« on: Tuesday 05 April 22 16:52 BST (UK)  »
Here's two I gleaned several years ago whilst searching in Ware.
from the Rev Thomas Hassall parish register.

1634
John Allen, one of the antient inhabitants of Amwell, aged above
foure score yeares, a labouringe man and of good and honest reputation,
a pentioner to the Newe River to clense and keepe the head, an old
servant to the church to guarde the chappell doore, to controle unrulye
boyes and correct intrudinge doggs, livinge allways poorelye but never
miserably, died and was buried from Hodsdon December jo.

1635
Edward Shadbolt of Amwell, a laboringe man of above threescore
and ten yeares of age, allwayes a good laborer, no spender,
without children, selldome eate good meate or dranke good drinke
or wore good cloathes, yet lived and dyed very poore and miserable,
buried Maye the xxiijth.

What a description....
"to guarde the chappell doore, to controle unrulye boyes and correct intrudinge doggs,"
and
"selldome eate good meate or dranke good drinke"

Made me chuckle

The homes were probably sold off and are now in private ownership.

For Example: If you typed BROWN and view the calendar for Brown, but entered the details for John Smith and those details were accurate, we would be able to locate it.

You couldn't make this up if you tried. Absolute gobbledegook - makes no sense at all.
