World War One / Re: medal cards help
« on: Friday 20 March 09 10:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Chaps,
no apologies needed, i''m just very happy for any help and assistance I can get, i'm eagerly awaiting the record from the guards museum. we've got a letter he sent to his sister from the prisoner of war camp at Merseberg, and that's dated May 1915 so unfortunately for him zee var vas over by the time that memoir starts, very interesting reading none the less, good idea about the war diaries though...
I once found a memoir of a poor chap who had spent the best part of the war at Merseberg, cracking read, I know this is off topic as well, but am i right in thinking that there aren't any records for WW1 POWs unless they were interviewed when they returned (which he wasn't) or were officers (he wasn't).

cheers

David thanks so much for that and my assumptions re the Innis Fusiliers seem to be borne out again. But still only an assumption.  However I will be visiitng Kew next week and this is a great reference for me to dig deeper.
Many thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Help with Birth Announcements
« on: Wednesday 18 March 09 21:18 GMT (UK)  »
thanks very much for all your help,
i thought one of the words was lady, but i'm so used to labourers i can't really believe this! The column with the skipper/S Kepper word, is headed Occupation so I guess it must be skipper, but presumably that could mean the captain of a fishing boat not necessarily a big boat, also do you think Wm would mean William? There sure were a lot of them.

Thanks again for all your help

yes, i think you could be right on both counts, it does look like skipper, i  had thought this i just am surprised whenever one of my ancestors says anything besides general labourer. Your right about the second point as well, west alves is just by the area where I had thought they all came from so it fits in nicely.

Just the third one to go... :P

Thanks for your help.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help with Birth Announcements

Hi, I've been struggling with deciphering a couple of words in three birth announcements and I was wondering if anyone else would have better luck.

The first one is straightforward enough, I just can't work out the word on the far right, presumably it's a job title, but not one I recognise at any rate.

The second I'm having trouble reading the father's name, also can anyone read what it says between William Innes and William Grant?

Many thanks for that . My grandmother when she was alive passed on teh story and I suppose it didn't help that he was a volunteer when he returned so the Tans were very keen to get hold of him !  What I dont know for sure is his regiment as i am only assuming it is the Inniskillen fusilers due to recruiting location and the regiments posting to the dardanelles. However I will get a look at the Kew records as you suggest

Cheers

I am looking for service record of Charles Mc gee from Donegal, Ireland. He served at Gallipoli/Dardanelles and then returned o Ireland  and deserted and was on the run in Ireland for the duration of the war and the uprising. Up until I knew he was a deserter ( only recently ) I had filed a medal record which matched ( Inniskilen Fusilers - served in the division at Gallipoli/Dardanellse and recruited in Donegal ) based on my assumptions.  However  I assume deserter were not awarded medals - was this the case?
