Hi Trish,

Yes, thanks so much, you have located the right family.  Many thanks for the info on Benjamin and George - this is very helpful.

Interestingly, it the birth certificate I have for Sarah and James son states Edward Brown despite the fact that he was born after his parents marriage and it states James Brooks as his father.  This is odd as is his mention as 'son in law' on the census.  I think they must mean 'step son' for Benjamin and that this is simply a census recorders error.  I would like to know where William went!

We cannot find anything for James Brooks/Brookes as his father is nameless on his marriage certificate to Sarah.  I have sent for the one for his marriage to rachel but I fear it will say the same.  Strange thing is that this area of Newbury/Thatcham etc is chock full of Brooks, most of them ending up in Windsor.  Makes life tricky and hard to verify identities.

I would very much like to know if either marriages produced any further children than already stated and if any baptism records for ANY of the children exist?  I think it may be the only way to go apart from sending for every birth certificate....   Ouch! :o

Thanks,  Flosse

Thanks all - this is great!
I can now confirm Rachel and her family thanks to your efforts on my behalf.  Much appreciated.

The reason I ask about their children is that I believe Rachel dies in 1853 and James Brooks remarries to Sarah Brown.  I cannot work out who's children are who's?  I will explain below:

James seems to have Edward Brooks (b.1848) and George Brooks (b.1850) whilst married to Rachel (in1851 census).  By 1861 census, Rachel has died and James has remmarried to Sarah Brown.   This cenus is confusing - some children are referred to as Brown and some as Brooks.

In 1851, Sarah Brown is unmarried and living with her father, Joseph, with children Benjamin (b. c1851) and William (b. c1848).   When she is with James Brooks ten years later, they have another son called Edward Brown Brooks (b1858) and William has gone.

Any help on finding the true identities of these children (apart from Edward Brown Brooks, whose Certificate I have) would be very helpful indeed, thanks.  It's very confusing as there are so many Brooks in the Thatcham/Newbury area and it's proving tricky to tie up.

Not sure if this is of any help to you but there is a Hedges forum on this address:

They seem to have links in the US and the UK and perhaps it may be worth a shot?

Could anyone please check a marriage and subsequent children's baptisms for me?

Looking for marriage for James Brooks (or spelt Brookes sometimes!) to Rachel Seymour.
1846, Thatcham area.

I believe they had several children but can only find two at this stage :
Edward Brooks b c1848
George Brooks b c1850
If you can confirm the wedding and their children, it would be very helpful to me indeed as I am having the age old problem of multiple families with the same named children born at the same time and need to ascertain who is who.....

Thanks so very much

Hoping someone can help with my look up request (see previous posting in thread) - made a mess of it by modifying a previous post instead of starting a new one - apologies!!

Thanks for your patience,

Many thanks indeed for all your kind efforts - appreciated.  Sometimes it is as much about eliminating the possibilities as it is about finding them!!  I will certainly investigate the Burcombe village link.  It is a very unusual name.

Adn I know wat you mean re. figners    ;D

Thanks again
