London and Middlesex / Help with street name please
« on: Yesterday at 19:03 »
I am having trouble locating a certain London street from the 1700’s.
I have scoured old maps of the area but cannot find anything that might be the street I am looking for.
The street in question is recorded in the baptism entry of John Rowland, son of William and Elizabeth Rowland in the “London, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1812”, for 7th July 1737 at St George in the East, Tower Hamlets.
It is abbreviated to what looks like G Her Street.
I looked on www.maps.thehunthouse.com but it hasn’t really lead me anywhere.
I will add a screen shot.
Does anyone have any ideas please?

The Common Room / Change of name in Victorian times…how easy?
« on: Tuesday 20 February 24 17:19 GMT (UK)  »
I am wondering how easy it would have been to change your name in the 1800’s.
My reason for asking this is that I think that my gt grandfather FJF may have done just this in c1879.
He appears in records with the name that I know him as FJF and the same occupation, that is in, census returns, births and marriage records of his children and two of his his and marriage certificates. (He had 4 “wives”) on his married certs his father’s name (FF) and occupation are given.
There are no records for him in the name I know him as before 1879.
This other chap FJH has the same two first names and same profession as my chap. Father has same first names F and profession. I found this on the baptism and marriage certificate for FJH.
FJH has records census, baptism and marriage up until 1879, then he disappears.
FJF abandoned his first “wife”, for whom there is no record of marriage but 4 children and “married” my gt gt grandmother, again for whom there is no record of marriage and one child.
Now…I have DNA matches to descendants of the children from his two “marriages” under the name FJF…and have just discovered DNA matches to the descendants of two the children of FJH. These matches place the descendants of both FJF and FJH at the same level of relationship to me.
So…to my original question. How easy would it have been for someone to change his identity back then? These days, we need our birth and marriage certificates to prove who we are. Would it have been easier, back then, to get away without these documents…or get forgeries, if needed?

Travelling People / RTFHS database question
« on: Monday 15 January 24 10:34 GMT (UK)  »
I was just looking at the database on the RTFHS (Romany and Traveller Family History Society)
http://rtfhs.org.uk/family-history-database/
Are there only the three counties of Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Wiltshire on the database?
I do admit, I am not too techno 😬😁

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Westminster Police Court Records
« on: Thursday 11 January 24 18:50 GMT (UK)  »
Has anyone any experience of accessing the Westminster Police Court records?
I am assuming that it is one of those things that will need a trip to an archive centre rather than being available on line?
I am all the way down in Cornwall, so a visit to any of the London based  Archives isn’t possible. I believe that the necessary records may well be held at the London Metropolitan Archives.
Is anyone planning a visit there at all, and would be prepared to look something up for me please?
I am after a record of the proceedings against Mary Ann Bastin, nee Simpson, who was summoned to Westminster Police Court for threatening behaviour towards her sister, Selina Buck, nee Simpson and Marian Evans. I became aware if this case via The British Newspaper Archives, where the case was widely reported across the country on 10th and 11th April, 1885.
My purpose for doing this, is to find out what happened to her daughter, Selina Ellen Bastin, the 15 year old girl that was allegedly abducted.
I know she died at St Michael’s Free Home in Axbridge, just over a year later in August 1886.
Thank you 🤞🏻

Somerset Lookup Requests / St Michael’s Sanatorium, Axbridge, Somerset
« on: Thursday 11 January 24 01:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hello.
Does anyone have access to the records for St Michael’s Sanatorium, Axbridge, please?
I am trying to discover information regarding
Selina Ellen Bastin, who died here at the age of 16, in August 1886.
She is buried in the cemetery there. I understand it was a sanatorium and convalescent home for people affected with TB.
Information I am looking for is relatives, if mentioned.
I know her mother was Mary Ann Bastin nee Simpson.
She had been summoned to Westminster Police Court the year before on charges of threatening her own sister, the child’s namesake, Selina Buck and another woman, Marian Evans. It appears that she believed Mrs Evans husband had absconded with her daughter.
I am interested to try and find out more about this story if I can.

Scotland / Availability of mother’s name on birth records
« on: Tuesday 09 January 24 19:36 GMT (UK)  »
When researching English, births, for dates AFTER September 1911, I often use freebmd.org.uk, as it gives the mother’s maiden name.
I have looked on the Scotland’s People website and, unfortunately it does not have that information available.
I checked on the sctbmd.org website and the surname I am looking up isn’t on there at all.
Is there anywhere that I can access, births since 1911, which will give details of the mother’s maiden name for Scottish birth or is that not available…yet?

Oxfordshire / Ursula Burnham buried 4 March 1655, Eynsham, Oxfordshire. Supposed witch
« on: Saturday 06 January 24 20:22 GMT (UK)  »
I am try to research the “supposed” witch, Ursula Burnham.
All I have is the burial records from 4th March 1655, on which, next to her name is, I believe, the latin word  “veneficia”, which would indicate a female poisoner or dabbler in witchcraft. I am not sure of the word preceding it though.
I am trying to find out more about her and even though I am researching it myself, I thought it might be worth asking on here, just in case anyone knows anything about her! 🧙🏻‍♀️🐈‍⬛
