The Common Room / Challenge: Find Phebe
« on: Monday 26 September 11 21:10 BST (UK) »
Sudeley Castle is upgrading a farmhouse on the estate, and in doing so, some delightful artefacts have come to light.
What appears to be a love letter and "match paper" were sent by Phebe MUNDY from The Angel, Oxford to a Mr TROTMAN in Winchcombe.
The letter was written in 1801, meaning that forty years elapse before meaningful records in the form of a census can be used to identify either the sender or the recipient.
It seems likely that the letter was received by Mr TROTMAN, because the seal on the letter was broken.
The Archivist at Sudeley would very much like to find out who the characters in this romantic story are - can you help? Who was Phebe - did she marry her beau? Who was he? There are several candidates in Winchcombe in 1841 ...
The letter can be seen here Phebe MUNDY's letter
The full story has been picked up by local and national press, for example here Gloucestershire Echo
