The Common Room / Challenge: Find Phebe
« on: Monday 26 September 11 21:10 BST (UK)  »
Sudeley Castle is upgrading a farmhouse on the estate, and in doing so, some delightful artefacts have come to light.

What appears to be a love letter and "match paper" were sent by Phebe MUNDY from The Angel, Oxford to a Mr TROTMAN in Winchcombe.

The letter was written in 1801, meaning that forty years elapse before meaningful records in the form of a census can be used to identify either the sender or the recipient.

It seems likely that the letter was received by Mr TROTMAN, because the seal on the letter was broken.

The Archivist at Sudeley would very much like to find out who the characters in this romantic story are - can you help? Who was Phebe - did she marry her beau? Who was he? There are several candidates in Winchcombe in 1841 ...

The letter can be seen here Phebe MUNDY's letter

The full story has been picked up by local and national press, for example here Gloucestershire Echo

World War One / 14677 Alexander FLECK MM 16 Highland Light Infantry
« on: Friday 16 September 11 20:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi guys

I have a Military Medal which was awarded to 14677 Alexander FLECK of the 16th Highland Light Infantry. His medal card indicates that he died, Killed in Action.

What more can I discover about him?  I would dearly like to see the citation for the award of the MM and know the circumstances of his death.

I believe the CWGC site has him mistranscribed as Andrew (Andrew K FLECK - his middle name was Kelso) and he died 1st July 1916. It could be that the memorial has his name wrong also - I have written to them to enquire.

Can anyone advise please?

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Goosegog Girl Again
« on: Sunday 03 April 11 17:43 BST (UK)  »
Me again!  Could I ask for another tidy up for little Goosegog please?  This is where she gets her name - she was caught "scrumping" gooseberries from next-door's bushes!!

Butter wouldn't melt ...

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Baby Goosegog - rescanned
« on: Saturday 02 April 11 16:35 BST (UK)  »
My first attempt at this - be gentle!  ;D

I would be grateful if you could clean up Baby Goosegog for me.  I would love a sepia copy but if you wish to play with colour too that's fine.

Please don't use her on any other site without my express permission.  Thanks.

The Common Room / Surname Interest Table - please note!
« on: Saturday 02 April 11 14:56 BST (UK)  »
I have just been checking the Surname Interest Table or SIT, to see whether there are new entries for the surnames that interest me.

And there are!!  Hurrah!!

Well, sort of.  Sadly, one or two are complete newcomers to Rootschat, who seem to have added their names to the SIT and then left again.  Which means we have no way of contacting them!

This is frustrating, so if you are thinking of using the SIT, please stick around and post a few times too, so that you can send and receive Personal Messages.  You never know, you might enjoy it!

 :D

Kind regards, your potential relative, Arranroots  ;) ;D ;D

Technical Help / Help - daughter has a virus!
« on: Sunday 16 January 11 21:38 GMT (UK)  »
Daughter is a student, with exams tomorrow.

She failed to install an anti-virus (I know, I know - she thought she had something but didn't)

She has been getting fake Windows virus warnings and other pop-ups which have now resulted in Internet Explorer and Google Chrome not working at all.

What can she do?  She can't download anything cos she can't get online.  Can she use a memory stick to load something from a fellow student's computer that might solve the problem?

Grateful for any help - and please don't give lectures - I've done that already ...
