Other than waiting on this, could you perhaps suggest any alternative ways I might be able to find them?

Tracing people forward in time to find descendants is always trickier than going backwards but it can be done. Oddly enough, due to privacy regulation, it is often the most recent few years that are the hard part.

One suggestion would be to look at online family trees to see whether there are any with the chap in question on them - and approach the owner. You can do this on sites such as Ancestry and Genes Reunited, as well as simply using a search engine. If you find one that fits, it is a question of approaching the owner for the information you need.

Or you can ask nice Rootschatters to see whether they can help!

Just having a quick look to see whether I can spot anything helpful.

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi Ellie

Welcome to Rootschat! :)

Although this topic is quite old, luckily the original poster has been online recently, so she should be able to contact you with an update. Unfortunately we don't allow email addresses to be posted but she can still send you a personal message. This works best after you've posted a few times, so if you want to reply to this, that counts as one!

Have you got access to genealogical records yourself - thinking in terms of probate for Robert etc?

Usually the reason people are asking questions on Rootschat is because they ARE a descendant - so we'll wait with bated breath. Make sure you let us know & if Rootschat gets a namecheck on the programme, we'd be delighted!

Kind regards, Arranroots :)

Hello

I couldn't find Thomas on the 1841 census.

The IGI has the marriage of a Thomas DENNING to a Susannah MISSON  in St James parish, Bristol, Gloucestershire on 21st May 1820, which looks promising.

It's worth searching the IGI for their children - lots! They are baptised in St Augustine the Less, Bristol until Matilda who is baptised in 1826 in St Anne, Soho. This makes it likely that they family are in London in 1841 but that's not helping you much!

There's this possibility for Susannah in 1841:

HO107/ 1047/ 3/ 9/ 49/ 14

Long Lane, Bermondsey, Surrey

Susan DENNING 50 servant No

In the household of Henry MANSFIELD

This would explain why Thomas describes himself as married but Susannah isn't at home in censuses.

Kind regards, Arranroots :)

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Re: Deaths in Cheltenham (Complete)

Hi Suds

Glad you got such a prompt and helpful response on Rootschat!

Your original request mentions a firm of solicitors - Midwinters - which is still in existence. If they handled the legalities around the death, it might be worth contacting them to see whether any records have been retained over the years.

If anyone is able to access SLOUGH burials, it's possible this couple are the ones mentioned above:

Possible probate: Henry CARTER of High Street Slough in the county of Buckinghamshire grocer who died 31 May 1882 at High Street was proved at the Principal Registry by Elizabeth CARTER of High Street widow the Relict the sole Executrix.  £358 8s 2d

Kelly's Directory 1883 gives Elizabeth CARTER as grocer in High St Slough

So possibly Henry gave up gardening for groceries and Elizabeth tried to follow suit.

If it's them, are they both buried in Slough?

;)

Hi Steve

That is interesting, thanks again - wonder whether she was interred in Hertfordshire somewhere, as that's where her HALL-FAIRCLOTH ancestors were from. Alternatively, her late husband Henry was a gardener to an estate (no idea which) so maybe he and she were interred together somewhere?

A mystery!

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

A little reminder that genealogy never stays still - this is how our ancestors will find our little world when they research what Britain was like in the 2010s:

And don't let anyone tell you that JONESes and SMITHs can't be researched!
