Completed Census Requests / * Completed* Help with an IGI batch number please
« on: Thursday 26 January 12 19:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

This relates to another post of mine relating to the marriage of William England X Martha Harper in Bristol. Not having been able to find their marriage, I am now trying to find the baptism of his bride in the vain hope that I might find that they married in the brides parish.

I've found a possible match on the IGI.

Martha Harper baptised 25 Dec 1798 father William, mother Martha, in Bristol.

Where in Bristol it doesn't say. The batch number is    C017184.

I cannot find any information out about where this batch covers. Either it's not there, or I'm being dense (probably the latter;D

Can anyone tell me where this batch covers?

I have also put this post on the Gloucestershire general page.

Gloucestershire / Bristol parishes
« on: Monday 23 January 12 17:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Does anyone know of a good site that has a map of the parishes of Bristol in the 1700's and 1800's?

There seem to be various maps of Bristol around, but I haven't found any that show where each of the parishes were.

London and Middlesex / Help needed with a Middlesex marriage
« on: Sunday 15 January 12 14:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Could somebody please help me find the marriage of:

Joseph England X Caroline Whitethread.

Joseph was born in Bristol, but Caroline came from Hampstead. Their first child Laura was born in 1846 in Kentish town (from the census records). I have not been able to find baptism records for their 1st 4 children but the subsequent 7 were all baptised in Old church St Pancras.

I know in 1851 they were living in Finsbury, Islington (All Saints), but for the most of their lives they were in St Pancras.

I have not been able to find their marriage on Free BMD. I doubt whether they married any earlier than 1840 as they were both born around 1826.

Any help would be appreciated.

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / A Bristol Marriage
« on: Tuesday 10 January 12 18:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I've just discovered that my London ancestors were in fact from Bristol.

I cannot find very many records online for Bristol (hardly any on the IGI).

I'm hoping that someone might have an index of marriages somewhere.

I'm looking for the marriage of:

William England & Martha Harper, probably married around 1820ish in Bristol.

I have them on the 1851 census in Islington North London Ref: HO107/1500 ff 398 page 11.

William England 52   a plasterer    born Bristol      1799
Martha 52                                          ditto             1799

Alfred 20                                            ditto             1831
Edwin 14                                           St Pancras    1837
Albert 12                                             ditto            1839
George 7                                             ditto            1844

Other children I've found from the 1841 census are:

John              1821
William          1822
Joseph          1826                                  in St Pancras

So I think they must have moved to London some time between 1831 - 1837.

Also Does anyone know if there are any easily accessible birth records for Bristol that cover this time frame? Preferably online, as I don't know what part of Bristol they were from so buying CD's could prove costly.

Martha's surname I got from Albert's birth certificate (although I'm descended from Joseph), so I am sure of the 2 names involved.

Any help would be much appreciated.

If it's any help, I found a couple of entries in the Pigot's directory of Gloucestershire for 1830 of:

George England     Plasterer / tiler / painter   9 Rosemary Lane Bristol

Joel England                      ditto                       Horfield Rd Bristol

This was the family profession so I feel sure they must be related somehow.

London and Middlesex / Missing Burial records from St Matthew Bethnal Green
« on: Wednesday 23 November 11 11:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Does anyone know whether the Burial records are available online for this church?

I have a subscription to Ancestry, but on browsing the records for 1833 & 1834 they are missing. The link for 1833 shows an image for 1822.  ???

I am looking for the death entry of Martha Record some time between 26th November 1833 (when she had her last child) and 21 January 1834 when her husband remarried as a widow!!!  :o

Any help would be appreciated.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Can anyone identify this place?
« on: Friday 28 October 11 18:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I'm after some help with a place name.

Can anyone identify the place in Gloucestershire. It was written in 1871 by a London enumerator. It has been transcribed as Rumrith. I think I may have found this person (Ann Crane nee Workman) in later census returns in London as coming from "Wotton Drup" and Wotton under edge. I cannot be certain that this is the same person though. The Ann I can be sure of is the one in 1871.

Looking at other samples of the enumerators writing I think this may well begin with 'R' as the letter 'B' seems to have a hook curving to the left at the bottom.

For reference the details are: Class: RG10; Piece: 179; Folio: 17; Page: 27;

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Armed Forces / Sherwood Foresters Militia
« on: Friday 09 September 11 15:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm posting this for a friend of mine, (well distant relative really).

"Can anyone please explain why someone attesting" to join the Sherwood Foresters Militia (3rd Bttn.) in 1907 should obtain his "discharge by purchase" only a few days later?
Other than a sudden and drastic change in family circumstances, is there some technical reason for this? Maybe the answer could lie with the fact that on his attestation record he states that he already is a member of the 2nd Volunteer bttn. Sherwood Foresters."

Any help would be appreciated.
