Occupation Interests / Royal Artillery (Horse Dealer) *Completed, Thanks
« on: Wednesday 02 December 09 23:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Firstly, please excuse my ignorance of military matters.   :-[

I have a 1943 marriage certificate on which the groom (apropriately) is described as Lance Bombadier, Royal Artillery (Horse Dealer).

Would horse dealer have been his role within the RA, or would it have been his occupation before enlistment?

He was 23 at the time, and I don't know if he volunteered for service.

Thank you,

'Hat.

London and Middlesex / Peck's Fishpaste Factory, London
« on: Wednesday 02 December 09 11:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Can anyone tell me anything about the history of Peck's Fishpaste Factory, which was located somewhere in London?

I believe it was closed temporarily in WWII, due to an unexploded bomb, and subsequently relocated in Australia (Wiki).

Thank you.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Occupation help, please.
« on: Monday 09 November 09 21:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Can anyone tell me what the occupation is, in the top line, please?

There appears to be a superscript "n" in the first word, changing "carpet..."
to "carpent...", but I can't make out the rest.

Thanks.

The Common Room / No fathers.........*Completed, Thank You*
« on: Saturday 17 October 09 15:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I've received a marriage certificate from the GRO, and the sections for Father's Name, and Rank or Profession, are blank, for both bride and groom.

It was a church wedding, in 1842.

Has anyone else had this, or has a mistake been made?

Thanks,

'Hat.

Technical Help / Removing Norton from Vista *Completed*
« on: Wednesday 07 October 09 11:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

The Norton subscription on my son's laptop has expired, and he asked me to install a free AV package.
I uninstalled Norton, and installed the AV that I use successfully (Rising), on XP.
The laptop wouldn't run. It booted to a blank screen, no task bar or icons, and then "stuck".
I took Rising off, and tried Comodo. The laptop wouldn't start, I just got the side-scrolling bars at the bottom of the screen.

Each time, I disconnected the battery, plugged it back in, and the machine "self restored", and is now as it was.

Is there something I need to know about Vista, or Norton, that is preventing these packages from installing properly?

Dell Inspiron, Vista 32.

Thanks, 'Hat.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) Lookup Requests / John George Watts, Hull, 1861
« on: Thursday 24 September 09 21:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to find John George Watts in the 1861 census.

In the '51 he's a Clerk, living with parents John and Sarah, in Hull.
In the '71 he's a Ship's Steward, wife Eliza, address Dock Street, Hull.

John was born abt. 1835, in Hull. John and Eliza married in 1865.

I had a look while I was in the library, today, but I couldn't find a likely match before I ran out of time.

Any help would be appreciated.

Technical Help / Keyboard Malfunction only on RC *Completed*
« on: Monday 14 September 09 13:30 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone got a cure for this?

This is what I get when typing the quotation mark:   @
This is what I get when typing the pound sign:   #
This is what I get when typing the ampersand:   "

This is only happening on RC!

In notepad and wordpad my keyboard is functioning normally. Strange.

(xpsp2, language is English)
