Technical Help / USB flashdrive reformat.
« on: Sunday 14 November 10 18:49 GMT (UK)  »
I have a 4gb USB flashdrive which contained corrupted data, and I couldn't delete or write to the drive.
Windows XP asked me if I wanted to format, which I tried, but then told me that it could not complete the format.
I have tried various other options (Disk Manager, PartitionMagic, Linux, utilities off the 'net,), but I have been unsuccessful so far.
The Properties dialogue shows the drive file system as RaW, 0 bytes free space, 0 bytes used space, so I'm assuming the mbr has been overwritten or corrupted.

Can this be repaired, or am I wasting my time?

Thanks,

'Hat.

Dorset Lookup Requests / Help finding my Fanny in Dorset, please?
« on: Friday 26 February 10 20:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

My Great Grandmother Fanny Ansley was born in Bridport, in 1866, to John Ansley (carpenter) and Anne.

I think I've found Fanny and Anne (widow) in the 1881 census (living with sister Ellen and her husband in Norwich), but I've been unable to locate any of the family in any previous census.

Fanny's birth certificate describes Anne as "late Connor, formerly King", but the only likely FreeBMD marriage match shows an Anne Northmore (?)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) Lookup Requests / Watts and Robinson in Hull
« on: Wednesday 10 February 10 11:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Mrs. Hat's 3x Great Grandfather John Watts, cabinet maker, married Sarah Robinson on the 27th November, 1820, Kingston upon Hull (I.G.I extracted).

I'd be very grateful if someone could help me with the parents.

1841 census: John was born abt. 1791, Lynn, Norfolk. Also resident is Elizabeth Watts, b. abt. 1766, not in county. Sarah was born abt. 1801, presumably in Hull.

Thank you.

p.s. I'm having problems with internet speed at the moment, so please, no hurry!

Hi,

I'm trialling FH4, and I have two questions.

In the vertical ancestor view, is it possible to horizontally "drag" a pair of boxes to overlay another pair of duplicate boxes (as in Grandparents of married cousins)?

Also, is it possible to change from the dull horizontal stripe to a more decorative background?

Thank you.

I have found a marriage between William James and Hannah Weedon, which sits very nicely with known facts.
(I.G.I. extracted, 28th August, 1809, St. Albans, Herts.)

If anyone can verify this, and possibly add parent names, I'd be very grateful.

Thank you.

Norfolk Completed Look up Requests / Which Steward? Honing. *Completed, Thanks.
« on: Saturday 16 January 10 12:57 GMT (UK)  »
I have a marriage between Richard Steward and Mary Andrews, 1782, Honing, courtesy of the I.G.I., extracted.
Checking the same year on the Norfolk Transcription Archive, for Honing, I find a marriage between Mary Andrews and Isaac Steward.

Is this likely to be a coincidence, or more likely that one of the entries is wrong?
Any advice on how I'd progress this would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Technical Help / USB stick not recognised? *Completed, Thanks.
« on: Thursday 14 January 10 13:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

My friend's machine refuses to recognise a 4gb usb memory stick.

The stick works, with no problem, in my computer.

Both machines run XP Pro.
His machine runs an external 4 way USB hub, from it's one socket, but plugging the stick into the motherboard socket directly does not cure the problem.

I suspect his older power supply might be the cause, but any other thoughts or suggestions would be very welcome.

Thank you,

'Hat.
