Hi Rosinish Yes I have done a DNA test but I have not made it public. My results came out as 93% I
Irish origins. I am almost certain my TOLAN/TOOLIN/ TOLAND  ancestors came from Donegal but I have no proof. There are no living relatives to check with and there is no information of their origins  in the catholic parish where they worshipped since 1845.  Any suggestions as to how to procede further on that search would be welcome. Regards   Orkrad

Rosie ,The statutory record  shows  Edward (one of the sons ) as illegitimate . In the marriage column there is only his mother's name .  The address is the family home and the location of the 1841,51,61, 71 censuses.  When recording the birth the mother Elizabeth TOLY/TOLLAN has only made her mark. This record confirms all the information we have from the baptism record.  I think it also indicates she was not able to write in English.  I have tried over a period of several years without success  to find the death of Charles DIVINE. There are a few deaths of a person of this name in the Greenock area but the ages and occupations simply dont match.  Thanks for your  continued interest. Its wonderful to have so much help.  R egards Orkrad

Thanks once again Rosie. You are a super sleuth. Will check out the Edward TOLY birth  record.
As regards the marriage record. I have the following : on 31st December 1852 Charles DIVINE ( boilermaker) and Elizabeth TORRENCE both residing in Port-Glasgow are booked in order to proclamation for marriage. (2)  These are records from the Church of Scotland and I have been told by LDS that it is possible that those performed by RC clergy might not be recorded as performed.  I am reasonably sure that the name TORRENCE is an interpretation of TOLINS/TOLAN . The bride was Irish and I am not sure the family spoke English. She was born  circa  1831  and appears in the 1841 census aged 10. Regards Orkrad

Yes Rosie You have the correct details re Catherine's mother. She was Elizabeth TOLAN/TOLLIN.her married name was DIVINE.  Her age is definitely wrong as she was10 yrs old in 1841 , Elizabeth's mother was Bridget TOLON/TOLAN ms GORMAN.

Catherine's mother Elizabeth / Bridget ?  had two children with her husband Charles DIVINE. She reverted to her maiden name when widowed and is back in the family home at 40 Church street Port Glasgow  in the 1861 census.  She had two further  sons  to whom she gave the surname TOLAN. The children appear to have no statutory birth certs and are born  circa 1866 and 1868.  No father's name appears on their baptism certificates.  One of the sons is my direct ancestor .

This is a most confusing family and I think there are some family secrets  yet to be discovered !. Orkrad

Thanks Rosinish  Great idea  Hadnt considered a timeline. Have lots of certificates and paper docs and Legacy Family tree printouts and DNA.  A time line sounds like a good opportunity to collate all this disparate infomation. Regards Orkrad.

Thanks Rosie, Forfarian, Wivenhoe, Jamjar and Neale  for your help.

Rosie, to answer your question the statutory  record of the marriage of Alexander MCBRYDE and CatherineDIVINE shows the following. Catherine's father _______ DIVINE ( boilermaker deceased ) and mother Bridget DIVINE (ms TOLLAN).
I have also tried over the years to find the death cert for Catherine's father. His name  according to his marriage certificate was  Charles.  I also am more than a bit puzzled that Catherine's mother is named  Bridget in several censuses and in others as Elizabeth DIVINE/TOLAN .  Catherine's grandmother in the 1841 census is also named Bridget so the name change may be to avoid confusion. The family TOLLIN/TOLLAN plus other name variations were from Ireland  ( there are no records of where they came from even in the local church where they worshipped) .   Were   Bridget and Elizabeth and Betty  alternative uses in Ireland for the same person?  The search continues.  Thank you Rosie. I did search Scotlands people for the deaths of Alexander and  Rosie without success. I now need to buy more credits to check out the details and download the info. I am also very grateful to you for folowing up Catherine to England .  The details on the Mc Intyre/Mc Bryde connection are also very valuable. Gilbert MCINTYRE exists in family photos and no one appears to know much about him apart from the fact that he was an engineer who worked for the Cunard line.  Another wee twig on a branch of the family tree to investigate . Regards Orkrad
