Australia / John & Elizabeth MANTEL emigrated to Australia after 1885
« on: Friday 06 January 17 14:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, I have a John Mantel/l (or Mantle) born 1816 Bedford & moved to Newport Pagnell with family before 1871. On 1881 census he is in Newport Pagnell, 'Artist in Hair', widower, age 66; wife Sarah had died December qtr 1880 age 63. Last sighting is him listed on the 1885 Electoral Roll at North Square, Shrubbery Cottage, Newport Pagnell. I've not found a death index for him or a sighting on the 1891 census. There is a marriage index in Sept 1885 in Newport Pagnell RD of John Mantell to Elizabeth Froggatt, as I've discounted the other 2 names.

Today I  found this snippet from local newspaper archive; from Beds Times 20th September 1946;
From Bedfordian's Diary – More memories of John Mantel. This tale was told. “After his wife, a gentle, lady-like person, died (in 1880), things did not go well for him. He married again (1885), and eventually emigrated at an advanced age to Australia, where he died".

So I'm now looking for passenger lists, emigration & immigration records to find out where they went. I've so far found a Mr & Mrs Mantell on the ship Himalaya that left London 8 Nov 1894 & arrived Sydney 4 Dec 1894, but there are no ages, initials/first names, UK address ... so not sure it's them.

Any help from Australian records would be welcome.

Thanks John

Hello, I have a John Mantel (or Mantle) born 1816 Bedford that moved to Newport Pagnell with his family before 1871. On 1881 census he is in North Square, Newport Pagnell, 'Artist in Hair', widower, age 66 with daughter Agnes. Wife Sarah had died December qtr 1880 in Newport Pagnell RD age 63.
In April 1882 Agnes, daughter of John Mantel of NP was married at NP. The last thing I can find is him listed on the 1885 Electoral Roll In 1881 in North Square, Shrubbery Cottage, Newport Pagnell.

I cannot find a death index for him or a sighting on the 1891 census - so I'm wondering if anyone might try to find him.

There is a marriage index in Sept 1885 in Newport Pagnell RD of John Mantell to Elizabeth Froggatt, I have assumed that it is her, as the other 2 names on the index Walter James Mason & Emma Price I have found as man & wife on the 1891 census. Again has anyone access to NP marriage registers to glean additional info from this.

Thanks in advance John

Huntingdonshire Lookup Requests / Birth/Baptism of Alice Lander late 1851/early 1852
« on: Saturday 08 October 16 12:35 BST (UK)  »
Stephen Bishop (1828 Hemingford Grey) married Mary Ann Lander (1828 Fenstanton) in Cambridge RD in Dec qtr 1854. They had 3 children Sarah 1856, Thomas 1857 & Lydia 1859 born Hemingford Grey. On 1861 census the family is living in HG but there is also daughter Alice age 9 born Fenstanton - thus in 1852 prior to the marriage.

1851 census has Mary Ann Lander being domestic servant to farmer at West End, Fenstanton.

From the Cambridge Chronicle of 10 April 1852 I've just found this snippet. Headed St Ives Petty Sessions April 5th. Ann Sander of Fenstanton applied for an order of affiliation on Stephen Bishop of Hemingford for the maintenance of her bastard child. An order was made on him for the payment of 1s 6d per week.

I cannot find the birth index for Alice Lander (or Sander) in 1851 or 1852 - so it'd be nice if someone else might find it. Also a possible baptism for Alice at Fenstanton or Hemingford. Also might the Hunts Archives have record of the affilliation order or more details of the St Ives Petty Sessions.

Thanks John

Northamptonshire / David Lewis - Baptist Minister at Brington
« on: Monday 27 June 16 15:47 BST (UK)  »
12 Oct 1842 Anna Wells, widow of Leominster, daughter of Samuel Wright, farmer marries David Lewis, baptist minister, of Moor Street, Birmingham, father David Lewis, Tailor; at St.Phillips, Birmingham. Witnesses Harriet Wright (age 13? - her niece)  & Joseph Gell.

As per Hereford Journal 26/10/1842 'Lately, at St Phillips Church, Birmingham, the Rev David Lewis of Brington, Northamptonshire to Ann, widow of the late Joseph Wells, gentleman, of Leominster, Herefordshire, and eldest daughter of Samuel Wright, late of Swanton Morley, Norfolk'

On 1841 census living at Brington, Northamptonshire is David Lewis, baptist minister, age 40, not born in Northants. He was born in Abergwili, Carmarthanshire as per 1851 census where they are living in Leominster, Herefordshire.

Question... for what period was David Lewis a baptist minister at Brington
