Lancashire / Can you find Robert Bailey/Bailiff c.1738
« on: Saturday 12 February 11 14:24 GMT (UK)  »
 :-[

Despite checking every possible parish register in the area I have been unable to find a baptism for a Robert Bailey/Bailiff c.1738. From later documents I know his father was William. Robert was married in 1764 at St Helen's Parish Churchtown Garstang Lancashire to Ellen Seller[nee Clarke] a widow. They lived in Claughton near Goosnargh, their children were all born there and Robert died there and was buried at St Helen's Parish Garstang.
I have not been able to find a marriage for his father William either, although tantalisingly there is a family of Bailey/Bailliffs being born in Goosnargh from 1740 with a father William. Is it just a case of maybe a clandestine marriage and a lost scribbled note of a baptism by the churchwarden.
I am doing this for a friend and would love to give him some hope. Does anyone have any ideas?

Lancashire / One Side Farm, Clayton le Moors

Does anyone have any idea where this farm actually is or was, or even if it ever existed. It is the name of the place where my orphaned grandfather William O'Shea said he was living and working as a labourer just before he joined the Lancashire Militia in July 1900. As he was only 13 years and 7 months old and pretended to be 17 years and 10 months, I wondered if he had made the name up.

Lancashire / Blackburn District Union Workhouse

Having just discovered that my grandad, his brother, sisters and mother were all in the Blackburn workhouse in the 1891 census, I wondered if anyone knows if the admission and discharge registers are extant for the 1880's & 1890's and available to research, and if so where are they to be found.
Thanks

Scotland / Birth of William Shea or O'Shea
« on: Sunday 29 August 10 12:05 BST (UK)  »
 :-\

In the 1911 census my grandfather William O'Shea says he was born in Blackburn c.1882 and on his marriage certificate in 1906, that his father was Richard O'Shea a tailor. I can't find a William born in Blackburn at that time on any other census. There is a William aged 4, born Scotland, in the Blackburn Workhouse in 1891 with other O'Shea children, Frances aged 7, Alfred Leo aged 9 both born Blackburn. Also a widowed Elizabeth O'Shea aged 29 with a baby Beatrice aged 3 months both born Manchester. She could be their mother. In 1881 I found a Richard Shea aged 43 a clothes dealer born Dublin Ireland married to an Elizabeth [nee Magee]born Manchester who could be the parents.
Could any kind Rootschatter discover anything about this William who may have been born in Scotland, or indeed anything to enlighten me. I never knew this grandad.

Scotland / Margaret Mullen marrying Francis Wallace somewhere in Scotland
« on: Tuesday 15 December 09 09:57 GMT (UK)  »

I am trying to help a young man who is a raw beginner in family history, to find his deceased mother's first marriage to Francis Wallace. She was Margaret Mullen born 1935 somewhere in Scotland. She later divorced him and remarried Henry Bentley c. late 1960's.
He knew nothing of this 1st marriage until her death, but now knows he has ½ siblings, somewhere.
I have no access to Scottish records. is there a kind person who can help me to help him.

Technical Help / AVG 9 Free Download
« on: Tuesday 24 November 09 09:26 GMT (UK)  »
Has anybody heard if AVG are not allowing people to download Free AVG 9 if they have had the free downloads 7.5, 8 and 8.5?
I have only had AVG 8.5 and was told to upgrade to 9 recently, I did so without a problem. Two friends who have had it from 7.5 and have previously upgraded without problem, cannot now upgrade to 9.
AVG keeps telling them that either the link is broken or thay must uninstall OLE, at the same time telling them yes they can have it if they pay.
Any help woulkd be appreciated.

Hampshire & IOW Completed Lookup Requests / Charles William James born Privett
« on: Thursday 19 November 09 09:48 GMT (UK)  »
:-[Does anybody know anything about a family called 'James'. I am helping a friend whose grandfather said he was born in Privett near Petersfield. Later she believes the family spent sometime in Australia and then went to Manchester where he died in 1971 aged 71 years.
I can't find anyone of this name in any census in Privett. On his marriage certificate he says his father was Frederick James.
Where could he have been baptised in that area?
He is a real mystery and as I live in Lancashire and do not know Hampshire can any kind rootschatter help with advice or a lookup in a register. I would be so grateful.

Berkshire Lookup Requests / The Hannington Family in Arborfield
« on: Wednesday 04 November 09 09:54 GMT (UK)  »
Is there a kind person who could look in the parish registers of Arborfield for the baptisms of Hanningtons born between 1850 and 1865, the children of John & Mary Ann Hannington.
I am helping a friend who has Parkinson's disease and although I have been able to do all her Lancashire ancestors with ease, as we both live there, I can't do too much in Berkshire apart from census.
The research I have done already has given her such enjoyment and I know she would love the Berkshire even more.
I would be so grateful.
