Technical Help / Re: e mailaddy hijacked

Hi corisande,

I should, of course, have acknowledged your earlier post saying the same thing.

I'm afraid that I was just concentrating on my own personal experience.

Sorry - and my apologies.

Kindest regards,

JAP

Technical Help / Re: e mailaddy hijacked

I happen to use Norton and have never had any problems (fingers crossed).
And I suspect that most AV programs are good and it's just a matter of choice and what best suits your own particular needs.

Just as is the case with most genealogical programs - all are good but you need to choose what best suits you.
As with cars, domestic appliances, etc, etc ...

My email addy was once (rather embarrassingly) misused.
NOTHING whatsoever to do with my computer or with me or with my AV, Norton!!
The problem stemmed from a correspondent who had my email addy in her address book - and, stupidly, didn't have an appropriate AV!
It was her unprotected computer which was attacked leading to misuse of my email addy which just happened to be in her unprotected computer.

If this happens, there's nothing one can do about it regardless of what AV one uses oneself.

JAP

Galway / Re: a letter to bohermore
« on: Wednesday 15 April 09 04:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi cathy m,

I wish you very well with your research and I hope that you do finally find Mary MORRIS.  The information and advice from corisande seems excellent.  Do let us know if you find Mary.

As there is a Bohermore in Co Galway, I think I'd persevere with that before checking out Bothermore.  They do look quite similar but I wonder about pronunciation?

Anyway, best of luck.

Kind regards,

JAP

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Re: Lance / Cole Surname Bristol Help Needed!!
« on: Wednesday 15 April 09 04:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi Ruth and all,

Sorry to have been so painfully pedantic!  And to continue thus!  There's always one. ::)

A few quick thoughts.

If Frances COLE's age was correctly given as 65 in 1851, that would give a birth year of ca 1786.  And would thus make her only 12 at the time of the marriage of John COLE & Frances INKS in 1798 - and therefore a most unlikely candidate for Frances INKS.
However the age of 80 given at her death in 1855 (giving a birth year of ca 1775 if correct) makes her a credible candidate for Frances INKS.  And if she is Frances INKS, she would thus have given birth to Thomas (born ca 1821) when aged ca 46 - a bit late but OK.
(This assumes, of course, that the Frances COLE who died in 1855 age 80 is the same person as the 'Fances' COLE aged 65 in the 1851 census.  Sorry - couldn't resist! ;D )

A thought re the middle name of Thomas H* COLE.  Do we have an actual signature where Thomas himself has signed his name using the middle name Henry?  Or are they all just transcriptions from original documents?

And a thought re Elizabeth Adelaide's birthplace; she herself might not have given it - it's perhaps likely that her husband completed the household schedule and might have 'misremembered'.

Regards,

JAP

Hi everybody,

Just being super careful ...

I guess we don't know that Frances COLE in the 1841 and 1851 censuses in Gloucestershire is the same person as the Frances INKS who married a John COLE in London in 17998 ...

And we don't know that a Frances who had children with a John COLE, bap in Shoreditch, Greater London and Lambeth, Surrey is just one person nor whether (if so) she is Frances INKS.

And we don't know whether Thomas Hamans COLE, bap 25 Feb 1821 in Bristol, parents John COLE & Frances (extracted entry) is the same person as Thomas Henry COLE who was a witness at the 1850 marriage of Elizabeth Adelaide COLE and/or Thomas Henry COLE who was the informant of the 1855 death of Frances COLE in Bristol and is buried with her.

Etc, etc ...

It would be good to see the complete entries for the relevant events from the various parish registers.

They might not help but ...

JAP
PS: The baptisms of Eliza Tarara COLE and Alfred COLE, both born 14 Oct 1819 and bap 14 Jan 1821 in Shoreditch, Greater London, parents John COLE & Frances (extracted entries) are fairly close to the baptism of Thomas Hamans COLE in Bristol, 25 Feb 1821, parents John COLE & Frances (extracted entry).
PPS: We don't know that Elizabeth Adelaide COLE was born in St Philip & Jacob do we - just that she was baptized there?

Essex / Re: Stanway IGI batch number?

Hi Carol (littlemak),

All congratulations are due to you for your wonderful finds of George TURKENTINE's birth, baptism and parentage (reply #14) and Mary Ann TURKENTINE's marriage to William PARTNER (reply #18).

They were the keys without which further progress wouldn't have been possible.

You are the one who should be taking a very well-deserved bow!!!

Best regards,

JAP
PS: William PARTNER & Mary Ann TURKENTINE were most certainly "of full age" when they married, eh.   :D

Back at reply #14 we had the following;
...
Had a look on the first disk, Colchester Extra Mural parish registers and ther is only one name like Turketine and it is for a boy as follows;
George TURKENTINE  -- Father Edward -- Mother Rachel -- living Lexden --occupation Blacksmith --baptised September 13th 1829 -- born July 22nd -- parish Lexden page 65. ...

Mary Ann seems to be a sister of the above George.

1851
HO107/1782/456/8
Stanway, Essex
TURKENTINE
Edward 58 Head Blacksmith b Suffolk Waldingfield
Rachel 60 wife b Suffolk Waldingfield
Mary Ann 30 daughter unmarried Servant b Suffolk Waldingfield
and a Visitor

1861
RG9/1103/47/3
Birch, Essex
PARTNER
William 48 Head, Grocer and Dealer b Essex Birch
Mary Ann 42 Wife, Grocer's Wife b Suffolk Gt Waldingfield

The possible birth of Edward TURKENTINE is in the IGI - 1792, Great Waldingfield, son of another Edward & Elizabeth COOPER.

In 1841, Edward & Rachel seem to be in Stanway, Essex
HO107/334/24/14
GRAPENTINE (that's how it's transcribed)
Edward 45? (transcribed as 65) Blacksmith
Rachel 45
Edward 20
George 11
all listed as born in the county!

And next door are
GRAPENTINE
William 40 Blacksmith
Charlott 35
Lucy(?) 25
Ann (transcribed as John) 4
all listed as born in the county.

Anyway, it looks as though Edward & Rachel moved from Great Waldingfield, Suffolk to Essex - which points to a link between the Suffolk TURKENTINEs and the Essex TURKENTINEs.  Looking at Edward jnr's birth year, and Mary Ann's birth year in various censuses, it looks as though Edward snr & Rachel moved from Suffolk to Essex some time between the birth of Mary Ann ca 1819 in Suffolk and the birth of George in 1829 in Essex.

This thread started with a question about Louisa A TURKENTINE b 1862
She has been found in the 1871 census (transcribed as TURKEWTINE) with her father George b ca 1830 in Lexden.
George seems likely to be the George quoted at the start of this post.
And this suggests that Mary Ann is Louisa's Aunt.
And that Edward & Rachel are Louisa's Grandparents.

Hi Alex,

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that a helpful Melburnian RootsChatter will be able to have a look at the Divorce papers.  ;D

And that you might be able to check through the Scottish LEITCH births at the relevant time just in case JBL did father a little LEITCH with Mary Catherine!

Do let us know on the forum of any developments.

Kindest regards,

Australia / Re: Alice Maude mee JACKSON death
« on: Tuesday 14 April 09 04:08 BST (UK)  »
hi all
looking for a death of alice maude stewart may have married again though
first marriage to john Coleman 1878
married  james alexander Stewart 1896
Alice maude's parents james jackson and janet may I have searched bdm nsw and queensland not Vic Alice had a birth james in 1898 newcastle
           thanks gene

Hi genefinder,

Lots of questions from me, I'm afraid!  :)

Did all of the above events take place in NSW?

Do you have the certificates (or transcriptions of them) for all of the above events?

There is an 1862 birth:
278/1862, Birth,  JACKSON  Alice M, father James W, mother Jeanette V, place Sydney
And the probable marriage of Alice M's parents in the previous year:
208/1861, Marriage,  JACKSON  James W,  MAY Janette V, place Sydney
Is this your family??

Do you know for certain that your Alice M JACKSON married at least twice - once to a Mr COLEMAN and once to a Mr STEWART (i.e. do you have the certificates)?

There is an 1878 marriage as follows:
1582/1878, Marriage,  COLEMAN  John,  JACKSON  Alice M, place Glebe
Does the certificate prove that this is "your" Alice M?

When did John COLEMAN die?

If Alice was a widow, her second marriage would normally be expected to be in her previous married name i.e. COLEMAN.  However, I can find no marriage between a male STEWART and a female COLEMAN in NSW between 1890 and 1900.

Did the second marriage of "your" Alice M take place in NSW?
And does the certificate prove that it is "your" Alice M?

Assuming that Alice might have re-married under her maiden name, I searched for marriages between a male STEWART and a female JACKSON in NSW in 1896.  There was only one - and the bride was listed as Alice M JACKSON.  However the groom's given name is John not James.
4264/1896, Marriage,  STEWART  John A,  JACKSON  Alice M, place Sydney

Also, I can find only one 1898 birth of a James STEWART in NSW but the father's given name is John not James.
32947/1898, Birth,  STEWART James B, father John A, mother Alice M, place Newcastle

Here is a death which might be of interest:
14332/1958, Death,  COLEMAN  Alice Maude, father James Woolcott, mother unknown, place Katoomba

Best of luck with your research.

Kind regards,

JAP
