Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Re: Can't find Phoebe Mallison

May Phoebe be the illegitimate daughter of Mary Ellen prior to her marriage to Thomas Mallinson or Mary Ellen was a widow when she married Thomas; and hence you should be looking for a Phoebe Widdowson?

My subscription to Ancestry has expired so I cannot check.

And good luck on your retirement.

There is a Mallinson project run by my half 2nd cousin, John Sykes Mallinson, and the sadly deceased Roger Mallinson at:

There are two Ecclesfield based trees, if they remained in the same area, so it is better for you to peruse these rather than me trying to second guess.

John is very helpful and will try and help if he can.

I agree with you and the baptisms were most probably at St Peter's.

Thank you once again.

There is a Duke of Leeds pub in New Mill which is not far from Cartworth/Hade Edge.

Welcome to Rootschat, DigleyMill

John Mitchell and Ann Flather are also my 3G Grandparents and I have a lot of information on their descendants.

John Mitchell remains an enigma as I have not found a baptism; this thread probably explains why :

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Re: Baptism in Barnsley Look Up Please

Thank you for taking the time to look this up, Pinetree, and I apologise for taking so long to respond but I have hardly been at home lately.

The father, Thomas Smart, was not deceased but I presume this was the easy way out of having another child baptised at the same time with a different father.

May I please ask for confirmation of the Church as familysearch says St Mary's not St Peter's? Not that familysearch gets things wrong, of course!

P*ssed it up against a wall in local parlance!

My father was a little preoccupied the last time I saw him as the water (watter) tank was leaking in the loft. I have got more sense out of him this time.

Holme pienets
Marsden cuckoos
And Hade Edge back o' wallers

In explanation:

Holme band's uniform was black and white; hence pienets (magpies). Brass band, of course.

In and around Holmfirth (and probably other places) you were 'cuckoo' if you were a bit daft. The story goes that some contraband was put in the cut (canal) in Marsden. The Police saw them when they were trying to retrieve it with a net so they said they were trying to catch the moon's reflection.

My father says it was back o' wallers not behind wallers. Hade Edge was quite remote and courting couples used to go there to be alone. People use to hide behind the walls to see what they were up to.

My Dad is 90 so if there is owt else then ask now!

Thank you, Claire.

I had looked at familysearch but only for 1880 to 1884. This is the right Florence so she must have been baptised 10 years after she was born.
