Dorset / Dorset Parish Registers online at Ancestry
« on: Thursday 20 October 11 23:23 BST (UK)  »
If you are prepared to pay Ancestry have completed their digitisation and indexing of Dorset Parish Registers. A great boon for us on the far side of the world.

Warwickshire / Warwickshire Parish Registers online at Ancestry

If you are prepared to pay you can access original images (indexed) of most Warwickshire parish registers online at Ancestry. There are some omissions - St Michael Coventry has very limited coverage I assume due the the poor state of the originals post-WWII.

Occupation Interests / A Huguenot "seculteur"?
« on: Saturday 08 October 11 09:29 BST (UK)  »
A Huguenot ancestor in the Artillery area of Spitalfields is described as a "seculteur" in a baptism record. I have seen this translated as "sculptor". Can anyone confirm whether this is correct?

Thanks

London and Middlesex / Missing Huguenot records on "The Genealogist"
« on: Saturday 08 October 11 09:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I've been slowly tracing my London/Middlesex Huguenot ancestors. Initially I used the Huguenot Society transcriptions on CD, but lately I've been trying to obtain digital copies of the original entries via the Non-conformist records on "The Genealogist".

Mostly I've been able to find them. Sometimes when I couldn't find an entry, I'd assume a mistranscription and look for an adjacent entry and this usually worked.

Over the last few weeks I've been working on a family based in the Artillery area of Spitalfields and there seems to be a large chunk of the Artillery records missing around 1722-1723.

I've tried putting in a common given name plus the piece number (RG4 4593), and no results are returned.

Has anyone else come across this problem?

Suffolk Completed Lookup Requests / *COMPLETED* Baptism Lookup SHIP Haughley PRs c1700
« on: Monday 26 September 11 10:58 BST (UK)  »
I was wondering if anyone could possibly look up a baptism for me in the PRs of Haughley.

My 6xg grandfather was born in Mickfield. His first marriage to Sarah Ship took place in 1723/4 in Haughley, so it seems as if that might be where Sarah was born.

From the marriage date I assume the baptism would take place between 1695 and 1705.

Thanks for bothering to read this,

England / Proving that banns had been read
« on: Monday 29 August 11 07:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I recently came across an incomplete marriage entry which had been crossed through with the comment to the effect of "banns not read in groom's parish". I've also tracked down marriage entries by finding a reference to the non-resident partner's parish in the banns. It set me wondering.

Was there any specified procedure by which a cleric made sure both sets of banns had been read before performing the ceremony? Did the non-resident partner have to bring a note from his home parish? Has anything like this survived?

Merely curious,

Hertfordshire / Aspenden - spelling and pronunciation
« on: Thursday 16 June 11 22:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how Aspenden is pronounced in the local Hertfordshire dialect? Also how much the spelling changed in the past.

While it is currently spelt Aspenden you won't find any entries for it in the LDS catalogue, as they have it listed under Aspeden and this is presumably how it is written in the church registers. Is anyone aware of any other spelling variants?

Thanks in advance.

Sussex / How to obtain photocopies of parish register entries?
« on: Saturday 28 May 11 07:31 BST (UK)  »
Could anybody advise on the best way to obtain photocopies of parish registers held by the East Sussex Record Office?

I live in Australia, but have ancestors living in Waldron and East Hoathly. Luckily both these parishes have been indexed and I have been able to obtain details of baptism, marriage and burial entries. I am now keen to obtain photocopies of the relevant register entries.

Normally I would borrow a film of the parish registers from the Family History Library, but neither of these parishes have been filmed. The process for obtaining copies from the East Sussex Record Office is tedious - send them a list of documents, wait for them to send a quote, send them a stirling cheque and wait for the documents to arrive (hoping that the quote is still valid).

In this day and age there's got to be a better way.

Dorset / Surname interests - SANSOM, RODD, STONE
« on: Wednesday 18 May 11 02:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

My 4xgreat-grandparents James Sansom & Mary Rodd married in Portland in 1805. James was a stonemason and the family moved around a bit. They baptized children in Wyke Regis and in Portsea, Hampshire. The family seemed to all end up in Brighton, Sussex with the widowed Mary dying there in 1837. I haven't found a death/burial for James yet.

Mary was from a long-term Portland family (daughter of John Rodd & Lucy Stone, baptized 1782), but James' origins are a bit of a mystery. There are Sansoms in Portland, but none of them baptize a James at about the right time. The two possibles I've found and not yet eliminated are the son of William & Hannah, baptized Symondsbury 1769 and the son of James and Susannah, baptized Lydlinch 1775. (Lydlinch is a bit far from Portland, but James Snr was from Buckland Newton and moved the family back there.)

I own a copy of the "Manor of Portland" CD, I have a copy of the Dorset names index on order (though it's taking a frustratingly long time to arrive) and I do know about the wonderful Dorset OPC page.

Would be happy to swap information with anybody else researching these families.
