Thanks very much for the prompt reply.

No indication of a link to the Debenham area in the entry but Sarah was definitely buried there. (Register of St Mary Debenham: Sarah Fairweather late Downing wife of Thomas age 48 buried 28 Mar 1801.)

However with them both being OTP there's a strong possibility that the Jane Fairweather d/o Thomas & Sarah whose baptism appears in the Sudbury BTs on 1 Mar 1776 may have been baptized in Hadleigh too. (I was dreading having to look through the entire FHL film for a single entry and couldn't really put in a lookup request without further justification.)

Thanks again,

Onward and up the family tree 8-)

Hi Gary,
I haven't updated my Fairweather file for a while, but some of what you have there is correct and some of what I originally wrote is disproven. I purchased the Debenham PR fiche from Suffolk Record Office and I've been indexing them for FreeREG (www.freereg.org.uk, 1700-1840 is complete) so you can check all the Fairweather entries there.
William Fairweather married Jane Wythe in 1741 and they had 7 children including John (1743), Thomas (1749), Elizabeth (1753) and the two Janes who died young. Elizabeth married Thomas Beecroft in 1773, had a number of children (including Elizabeth (1776) and Jane (1778) named after her grandmother Jane nee Wythe). She was buried in 1795 (Elizabeth B, wife of Thomas, age 41). (BTW it is the age at burial which determines which Elizabeth F married Thomas B.) So the marriage witness can't be the wife of Thomas B but is probably his daughter, Elizabeth (1776).

Thomas (1749) seems to disappear from the Debenham records until a Sarah F, late Downing, wife of Thomas, age 48, was buried in 1801 and this links to a marriage in Hadleigh in 1775 (Thomas F & Sarah D). The only Thomas this could be is Thomas (1749). The Jane d/o Thomas & Sarah baptized in 1776 is probably their daughter. The burial indicates that the family were resident in Debenham c1800. If this is the Jane who married Henry Keene (and the age is an exact match for the age on her burial), this would make the witnesses her uncle John and cousin, Elizabeth B. I've found a burial for a Thomas of the right age in Eye in 1825, so it looks as if Thomas was a bit peripatetic and he may have left his wife and child(ren?) with his more sedentary relatives in Debenham.

The Fairweathers were very unimaginative when it came to naming their children and I'm still collecting data and trying to sort them out. I've mapped out all the burials in the 1st Edition Suffolk Burial Index and they are strongly centred on Debenham, with outposts in the neighbouring parishes (particularly Wetheringsett). I'm collecting indexes of these parishes, but collating the data and sorting it out takes time which I don't have at the moment.

Whichever way, it looks as if we are distant cousins. 8-)

Suffolk Lookup Requests / FAIRWEATHER-DOWNING Marriage lookup Hadleigh 1775
« on: Thursday 16 May 13 03:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
There is an entry on FamilySearch for a marriage between Thomas Fairweather and Sarah Downing on 30 Jul 1775 at Hadleigh. I think this may be my ggggg-grandparents, but it is a bit out of area for my family.

I wonder if anyone could check the original parish register entry for me to see if there is any additonal information (e.g. parish of origin, witnesses, bachelor/spinster etc).

Thanks to anyone who takes the trouble to read this.

Thanks to all who replied. I think I may be on the track of my Jane Fairweather.

FamilySearch have added some transcriptions from the Sudbury Archdeacon's transcripts and a Jane Fairweather, ch 1 Mar 1776, d/o Thomas & Sarah has been indexed. No parish unfortunately (and there's a lot of Parishes in Sudbury 8-0 ). From here I was a able to find a marriage for Thomas Fairweather and Sarah Downer, 30 Jul 1775, Hadleigh. This may seem a long way from home, but Sarah Fairweather nee Downer, wife of Thomas, age 48, was buried in Debenham on 28 Mar 1801. So it looks as if Jane may have been the daughter of Thomas Fairweather ch 25 Nov 1749 in Debenham, son of William Fairweather and Jane Wythe.

Now to track down the location of that baptism!

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Re: Doncaster St George Baptisms c 1760 WOOD

Thanks for that. It explains why Doncaster is a notable omission in both the Yorkshire Parish Register Society and Doncaster & District transcriptions.

I'll check out the Pontefract Frances (to make sure she is "available") and won't bother with the St George Doncaster original PR films (go for the BTs instead).

Thanks for helping,

Sue  ;)

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Doncaster St George Baptisms c 1760 WOOD
« on: Monday 19 November 12 09:21 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks to all who take the time to read and possibly help with this request.

My ggggg-grandparents, William Oldfield and Frances Wood, were married in Doncaster St George, 1st January 1781 by licence. William was stated to be of Brodsworth and the couple baptised their first child there on 6 Jan 1782 before moving to London, William Snr having been baptised in Brodsworth 3 Oct 1756. No information is given as to the place of origin of Frances Wood and no age is given in her burial entry in London.

There is a Frances Wood baptised at Wath upon Dearne 23 Feb 1762. From other baptisms it seems that the family lived at the hamlet of Hoober. However there is also a burial of Frances Wood, age 20, on 5 Mar 1782 at Wentworth, a chapelry of Wath near Hoober which I think eliminates her.

Given that the marriage took place in Doncaster, there is a possibility that Frances was baptised there. Would anybody be able to check the Doncaster St George Baptisms for me. I'm afraid I can't specify the date any closer than probably between 1755 and 1765.

thanks again,

PS - I agree the 1797 Harpenden John Farr has got to be the Hyde one. The marriage is in Harpenden: John Farr = Ann Lines, 2 Jan 1826. He would only have been 15 at the time of the Farr-Rolf marriage.

Thanks for that. My problem was that I hadn't found the East/West Hyde John & Ann in the 1841 census or Hannah in the 1851 census.

I guess that means we are cousins to some degree (though I'm one generation further down).  :)

Because I'm descended from William, one of the 2 Sandridge-born children of Matthew and Mary, I borrowed the LDS Sandridge film to get copies of his baptism and Matthew & Mary's marriage. There are a couple of generations of Gathards in Sandridge too. If you would like a copy of the Sandridge information send me a private message with your email.

William moved to Codicote and married. He and his wife had 13 children and ~90 grandchildren, ~70 of which were born and bred in Codicote! On the baptism of one of his children there is an asterisk next to the surname and a note by the vicar at the bottom of the page saying the name is variously spelt Roaff, Roff or Roft and is pronounced all three ways, i.e. he doesn't know how it should be spelt! Some of the Codicote family became Rofts, others went back to Rolph (with a silent "l").

Thanks again for the help. I can stop hunting and worrying, enter the data and move on.  8)

Hi Janan,
I am also trying to trace what became of Hannah Rolph/Roaff/Rolf/Roft etc (spelling optional) who was the sister of my gggg-grandfather William Rolph. Thanks Peter Cornish for the information on the children & the marriage. Elizabeth Roaff was Hannah's older sister.
I have nearly convinced myself that the couple are the John and Hannah/Ann living at East Hyde, just on the Bedfordshire side of the county border north of Harpenden. Emma (born 1826, ch 1841) is certainly living there, but Hannah/Ann states she was born at East Hyde in the 1851 & 1861 censuses. Have you managed to confirm whether this is the same couple?
