thanks Robbiesmum...some good snippets that I wasnt aware of, ie John Robson's parish.  The Jacob Williamson & Elizabeth Robson marriage -  I was wondering whether she was the Betty Robson that was born in 1802 so the name of the witnesses fit as does her age at death.

Many thanks

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Re: Carlisle St Mary's Baptism - Jane Black 1828-31
« on: Tuesday 11 June 13 15:10 BST (UK)  »
In 1841 I believe Jane is living in Kirkandrews upon Esk, 10 years old, with John Robson & Mary Robson (nee Tinning) and their son James Robson.

As Mary Robson is also living with Jane (now Percival) in Netherby in 1861, I suspect, but I havent been able to prove yet, that John & Mary Robson are Jane's Grandparents. There are baptisms for two children belonging to John & Mary Robson - Betty 1802 & James 1804 both Arthuret but I am unable to find a baptism for a daughter Mary Robson.

From Jane's marriage certificate 12 Nov 1853 Rockcliffe to John Percival, her father James Black, is a labourer.

Here's where it gets complicated...

James Black & Mary Robson married in Gretna 9 Jun 1832 and also 26 Jan 1833 in Kirklinton.
Witnesses were James Robson and Sarah Tinning. These witnesses confirm that this Mary Robson is connected to the Mary & John Robson Jane is living with.

There is a James Black & Mary Black living in Kirklinton in 1841.  I suspect this James & Mary Black are Jane's parents.

By 1851 James & Mary Black are in Walton Le Dale, Lancashire with a family - John 8yrs born in Ellel, Lancashire, Betty A 5yrs born in Ashton, Lancs,  Mary 4 yrs born in Ashton, Lancs and Jane A 3 months born in Walton Le Dale.

In 1861 the family are in Condover, Shropshire with two new additions Margaret 8yrs born Walton, Lancs and Sarah 2yrs born Condover.

In 1871`& 1881  they are in St Mary Redcliffe, Gloucesterhire.

This is definitely James Black & Mary Robson as I sent for the birth certificate of one of their children and it confirmed mother's maiden name as Robson.

So, I am looking for
1) Jane Black's baptism which will hopefully confirm that Mary Robson is her mother  and my 3xGGM
2) Mary Robson's baptism (1812-1818 Arthuret/Longtown) which will hopefully confirm John & Mary Robson as her parents and  my 4xGreat Grandparents.

Hope this all makes some sense  ::)

I have a little "shopping list" of five marriages and I need to confirm they are "my" ancestors.

If anyone has some spare time I would really appreciate a lookup to see who the witnesses are:

Arthuret: John Robson and Mary Tinning, 29 Jan 1801

Arthuret: Elizabeth Robson and Jacob Williamson, 24 May 1822

Kirklinton: William Black and Mary Steel, 8th Dec 1827

Kirkandrews upon Esk: James Robson and Mary Blake, 14 Nov 1823

Kirkandrews upon Esk: Catherine Robson and William Irving, 16 April 1843

Many thanks....

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Carlisle St Mary's Baptism - Jane Black 1828-31
« on: Monday 10 June 13 20:33 BST (UK)  »
I'm struggling to find the baptism of my 2xGreat Grandmother Jane Black, daughter of James Black and I believe, Mary Robson.

According to census she was born some time between 1828 and 1831.

In 1851 there is a Jane Black, a 21 year old servant working in the parish of Cargo and she was born in Carlisle. I cant be absolutely sure this Jane is my Jane.

In 1861 "my" Jane is 30 and Rockcliff is down as her place of birth. She is now Jane Percival and living in the parish of Netherby.

In 1871 she is 43 and "Saint Meries, Cumberland" is her place of birth.  At first, I assumed this would be the church St Mary's in Rockcliffe but there's no record under Rockcliffe baptisms for this period. Jane Percival is now living in South Bank, Yorkshire with her family.

I have also checked parish records for Kirklinton, Kirkandrews upon Esk and Arthuret but no luck.

So, I'm now wondering whether "Saint Meries" is the parish of St Mary's in Carlisle and would appreciate a lookup if anyone is visiting the Archives Office.

Many thanks.

robbiesmum, thanks ever so much for this, really appreciate your help!  Yes, this does help a lot....

I believe Mary & John Robson were my 4xGreatGrandparents but I am having trouble confirming my 3xGreat Grandmother who I believe is their daughter Mary Robson and who married James Black in the marriage you have looked up (1833 Kirklinton).

Mary Robson snr was Mary Tinning b abt 1768 in Arthuret.  She married John Robson 29 Jan 1801 in Arthuret. I believe their children were Betty Robson b 1802 Arthuret and James Robson b 1804 Arthuret as I have found their baptisms but no sign of a baptism for Mary Robson.

I have a definite link with Mary & John Robson and my 2xGreatGrandmother Jane Black in 1841 (Jane is 10yrs old living with John & Mary Robson & James Robson at Kirklinton), and also in 1861 Mary Robson widower is living at Netherby with Jane who is now Jane Percival. I know from Jane's marriage certificate at Rockcliffe that her father was James Black, a labourer and a David Tinning was a witness.

What makes it harder is that I cannot find Jane's baptism either which, according to 1861 & 1871 census, she was born about 1831 at Rockcliffe and "Saint Meries" which I assume is St Mary's Church.  However, I have checked Rockcliffe transcriptions (again, only the transcribed index) as well as  Arthuret and Kirklinton indexes ...nothing for a Jane Black or her likely mother Mary Robson.

So....your information does confirm that this James Black & Mary Robson are connected to James Robson (her brother) and the Tinnings....so I think it is highly likely these are my 3xGreat Grandparents.

Phew!! If that makes sense I'll eat my hat!  Anyway thank you ever so much.  I'm not sure what my next step is...suppose I need to get my Phillimore's out and have a look at other possibe parishes I need to check.

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Julie

ps  btw I am a robbiesmum too except as I originally come from Middlesbrough, I am a robbiesmam!!

I have recently found a marriage for James Black and Mary Robson on the Family Search site - 26th January 1833 at Kirklinton and also at Arthuret.  At the Society of Genealogists in London last week I checked indexes for both Kirklinton and Arthuret parishes and it is actually recorded in the Kirklinton Marriage Indexes 1813-1839 (nothing in Arthuret index).

If anyone happens to be visiting the Archives, I would really appreciate a look up of the original record as opposed to the indexes as I really want to know who the witnesses are as this may well prove whether these two people are my ancestors.

If someone is kind enough to help and responds then thank you.... I am away for a week on holiday and will be in touch on my return.

Fingers & toes crossed....!

Julie

Emyr, thanks ever so much - yes I have the baptisms from FindMyPast so thanks for confirming these for me.  I did wonder abt the reference to corvizer/shoemaker....interestingly on his son Robert's marriage record father John Jonathan is a Constable!  John died in 1828 so I am thinking he must have been a Constable in the parish...as opposed to a Police Constable. Fascinating stuff!

Emyr, how kind of you....thank you so much!!  :D   Although its a shame there's no further information to definitely confirm, ie his occupation as a shoemaker, this looks very promising given their first child was born in  Llanbeblig in 1800!

Much appreciated.
