Surrey / Peeble Combe Surrey
« on: Thursday 05 November 09 15:16 GMT (UK)  »
We have a postcard addressed to my grandmother (who was in service in the 1920s) at Pebblecombe Walton on the Hill Surrey.  I see from local maps that there is a large house called Peeble Combe (note the spelling variance) in Pebblecombe south of Walton on the Hill.   Anyone out there know anything of the 1920s history of the house?

Sussex / Dad's friends in Sussex (possibly)
« on: Tuesday 20 October 09 16:38 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone recognize anybody in the attached photo?  Our best guess is that it was taken between 1920 and 1929 and may be of carpenters and wheelwrights in Alfriston Sussex.

Essex Lookup Requests / Essex Standard Archive - Double
« on: Thursday 15 October 09 16:38 BST (UK)  »
Would there be a kind soul who could look up (at Colchester library?) the Nov 1857 issue of the Essex Standard specifically for the article referring to the longevity of the DOUBLE family residing in Raydon at that time.  I have a transcript but would love a copy of the original if that is possible.  Regards  MaxD

Sussex / Wheelwrights in Alfriston
« on: Sunday 20 September 09 18:42 BST (UK)  »
I am seeking any information on wheelwrights (profession not surname!) in Alfriston in the 1920s.  Family verbal history has it that our father was apprenticed to a wheelwright in Alfriston, not before mid 1920 and not after mid 1929.  We have a photo which may be of his workmates at the time, but no other information.  Can anyone help please?

World War One / WW1 memorial Plaque(Penny)
« on: Wednesday 02 September 09 14:55 BST (UK)  »
Would the WW1 Memorial Plaque (penny) be issued to the NOK of a soldier who died of flu during WW1 or would it only have been for those who died as a result of enemy action?

Armed Forces / Soldiers died in the great War
« on: Wednesday 02 September 09 14:51 BST (UK)  »
Could some kind soul with access to the original "Soldiers who etc..." clarify a confusion:

Pte George Henry Allin 1 Royal Berks died 26 Aug 1914 at Moreilles (2 weeks after landing in France!).  Ancestry have transcribed his residence as Reading and enlistment Camberwell.  Commonwealth War Graves Commission have used the same source and have enlistment Reading and residence Camberwell.  I'd be grateful for confirmation of the right details.  Thanks.

Does anyone know where the staff records of the Junior Athenaeum Club, closed in the 30s (?), might be?  (It is not connected to the still open Athenaeum Club).
