Armed Forces / Colonel White's Flying column - Second Boer War
« on: Sunday 15 May 16 20:14 BST (UK)  »
The service record of a man I am interested in contains a reference to "Colonel White's Flying Column" and the dates 11 Nov 1900 to 13 Jan 1901.  I can't find a reference to it anywhere, can someone help please.  (I know what a flying column was/is, it it is the specific one commanded by Col White I want to track down).

Armed Forces / Training in the early 1800s
« on: Thursday 28 April 16 09:43 BST (UK)  »
I have been looking at a young man who enlisted in the 32nd Foot in April 1807 at Tewkesbury, is with them at Waterloo and still on the muster roll in Dec 1815.  The history of the 32nd is beautifully covered in a book by his company commander.  By August 1807, 4 months after he joined, the regiment was already fighting in Portugal.  This set me to wondering where such a chap might have received his kitting out and basic training and how long this might have taken.  I am not really after the man's specific history, just an idea of what the first months (weeks?) would have entailed for a 15 year old recruit.

The Common Room / Query about the 1939 register
« on: Wednesday 27 April 16 13:54 BST (UK)  »
It is quite clear that records on the 1939 are closed until 100 years after the date of birth of an individual.  However, I am looking at a household where the parents, born 1890 and 1879 are visible, as per the rules, another person who I guess is a daughter with a birth date of 1918 is closed, also as per the rules, but the record of a son whose birth date is 1920 is visible.

Presumably this implies that the son has been matched by FindMyPast to a death record but the other person hasn't - is that right?

Europe / On the ground research in Vienna
« on: Sunday 14 February 16 19:30 GMT (UK)  »
Is there a Rootschatterer in Vienna who would be prepared to try to help with research into a particular individual in the 1900-1914 time frame?  I would prefer not to put the name on here publically.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Which prison
« on: Wednesday 20 January 16 11:05 GMT (UK)  »
The attached is the order for the High Sheriff of Oxford to remove certain prisoners " to (somewhere) in (something)" and, next line, for the Governor of (somewhere) to receive said prisoners.

Could an eagle eye please fill in the gaps, where and in what -Pentonville perhaps?

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Wilts marriages look up please
« on: Friday 08 January 16 16:49 GMT (UK)  »
William Ball married Sarah Stevens in 1832 in Chilmark.  Sarah was from Fonthill Gifford and born 1811-1814 (from later censuses).  IGI has two Sarah Stevens born FG, one baptised 1812 father Thomas and the other baptised 1813 father John.  I'd be most grateful if someone could please check out the marriage for the name of the father.

« on: Tuesday 08 December 15 15:13 GMT (UK)  »
I'd be grateful for a second opinion on the following bits from the attached.  I read them as:

Box 1 Johann Otto Schober
Box 2 Zollner (customs official)
Box 4 Wien (Vienna) St Christof

Thank you

World War One / Cap badge
« on: Friday 23 October 15 09:38 BST (UK)  »
From a pre- Great War photo, 1902/5 ish.  No clues on the remainder, the subject is wearing a greatcoat, one undecipherable button visible, no sleeve or shoulder insignia, wearing shoes.  My best guess is Coldstream Guards, any other thoughts gratefully received.

World War Two / Cushiest WW2 billet?
« on: Monday 21 September 15 17:39 BST (UK)  »
Helping a friend out with his service connections, I came across an artilleryman of 2nd Heavy Battery who manned the coastal defence guns in Jamaica, sadly he died from drowning.  These were, according to a Jamaica history, never fired except on range practice.  In 1939, in addition to the Gunners, there were elements of R Sigs, RE and KSLI as well as Jamaican troops.

Could this be near the top of the list of 1939-45 cushy billets?
