There is certainly no 22 Company diary at the National Archives.  The suggestions made by Markw78 may prove your best approach.

The X list is explained in a number of places example here  http://www.commandoveterans.org/x_lists

No diary found as yet.

Joining the dots - you've seen that his discharge papers say he was born in the parish of Deane near Overton and that was his intended place of residence after discharge.  Can't be many William Knights born approx 1838 in Deane?  He gave his age as 21 when he signed on in 1859 and the army wouldn't check unless it was obvious a fib, so consent doesn't come into it, that was only required up to the age of 16.

PS FreeBMD has a birth in Q 4 1838 in Basingstoke reg district (which includes Deane)

It is the norm to find only a discharge record for that period.  As you have seen, that tells you he served from October 1859 to July 1874 and that he was 21 when he enlisted.  He intended to live in Overton when he was discharged.

His number was issued in the period October 1917 to Feb 1918 (No Labour No Battle).

I should amend my earlier statement about the badge.  The Labour Corps wore the GSC badge until late 1918 when they received their own Corps badge although some continued to wear that badge.  We can at least sugest that the photo was after Jul/Aug 1917.

The photo would most probably have been taken before the Labour Corps, who had their own badge,  was formed.  Home Service (Employment) Companies were formed in July/August 1917. 566 Coy was employed in the Blackpool area.  These companies were formed from the least fit men who were already being employed on garrison type duties at home and provided batmen. cooks, storemen and the like. His number, if you have it, will give an indication as to when he was transferred to the Labour Corps, and may turn up a pension claim.

The word Manchester at the bottom of their badge gives the badge a flat bottom if that makes sense. The GSC badge has the upward indent seen on his badge. (Can't post pics on my less than smart phone!)
