Scotland / 'Christian' as forename - Marriage in Weyms 1732
« on: Tuesday 29 September 09 17:43 BST (UK)  »
I have been researching the marriage of George Robertson and Margaret Cockburn in 'Wemys', Fife whose first child, Charles, was born 28/9/1733.  The only marriage I can find is between George Robertson and 'Christian' Cockburn on 15/12/1732.  On the same page of the register of about 10 marriages, there are 3 other brides called 'Christian'.  Does anyone know whether this was a legitimate forename and, if not, why this forename was used?  Could this be the marriage I'm looking for?

Armed Forces / 1881 census - 108 Regt, Fulwood Barracks, Lancashire

Trying to trace my GGF James Carson back to Belfast.  The first record I have of him is 1886 on his marriage to Mary Bowland in Liverpool. He is 26 and a Joiner.  In the 1911 census he states he is from Belfast.  The only possible match in the 1881 England census is James aged 20 and he is a Private in the 108 Regt based at Fulwood Barracks.  Does anyone have any knowledge of the 108th ans if it's likely that they would have recruited in Belfast?  If so, where can I find out more.  Paula

Durham / Heworth Lane near Gateshead-Births
« on: Sunday 14 June 09 19:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi, apologies if I've already posted this request for info on this site.

Looking for any information on birth/baptism records for Heworth Lane, Gateshead.   My relatives Bartholomew (GGF) and James Cunningham are on the 1861 census as living and being born in Heworth Lane, Durham.  I cannot find either of them on the civil registration.  Can anyone help?  Details are:

Peter Cunningham (transcribed Conningham) 35 Head Chemical Worker born Ireland
Rosa 30 born Ireland
Mary daur 11 born Scotland
Bartholomew son 5 born Hewarth Lane, Durham
James son 8 months born Durham.

The parents married in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire and had Mary, but they don't seem to have registered her in Scotland or England by the look of it.

As the census moves on over the years when Batty moves to the Widnes area of Lancashire, his place of birth becomes a bit more unclear, Newcastle 'Staffordshire' not! and Felton 'Cumberland' not!

Is there anyone who knows the area well and could give me a clue on churches in the area around the time and where any baptism could have taken place?  Batty's son, born Bartholomew Dal(e)y in 1892 in Widnes was definitely RC.

Look forward to hearing from anyone who can give me specifics or general info.
