The Common Room / Re: Find My Past Subscription
« on: Wednesday 29 November 17 11:48 GMT (UK)  »

So as they say you pays your money and takes your choice.

The problem is that the old £120 Britain subscription included the newspapers but not the Irish records. Now it has the Irish records but not the newspapers. So those of use who want the newspapers but have no need for the non UK records are feeling slightly aggrieved.
I will be hit with a significant increase if I ever let my subscription lapse. :(

And as an aside, although the 1939 register is presented as a premium dataset and not for beginners, someone starting out their research today would probably want to look at it before moving further back.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: eloping to Rotherham, 1800s
« on: Sunday 22 October 17 21:34 BST (UK)  »
I have many ancestors from South Yorkshire and I have the impression (not hard evidence unfortunately) that Rotherham was indeed where couples went when they didn't want too many questions asked. One of my 3x gt grandmothers was 15 when she married there in 1851.

Some of the local experts at www.sheffieldindexers.com will probably be able to answer your question.

without any adjustment for the different in exchange rates.

My invoice said £24.99 +VAT. So they did adjust it. (I've no idea how the US side deals with sales taxes I think it varies by state).

I rarely use FTM so I'm beginning to wonder why I ordered it.  Actually I remember - it was the prospect of having to pay £79.99 if I suddenly decided I needed treesync.

The Common Room / Re: GRO indexes on gro.gov.uk !

I've been adding lost children to most of my 19th century ancestors - and it was a rare family that didn't lose at least 1 child. I've found 3 half siblings (all died in infancy) for my gt grandfather.  I'd always wondered if his mother had any children from her 1st marriage. I've also found a twin for one of my gt gt grandmothers.  Today I'm going to try and narrow down some Jones families in Wales - wish me luck  :P

Very pleased to have found a birth record for my gt gt gt grandmother today in the non conformist records. And in addition half a dozen siblings I previously knew nothing about (viewed for free in an index search)

Someone named "God Amen" apparently left a number of Wills over the years.  ;D

Misaligned columns seem to be quite common. I've submitted 3 for correction in the last 2 days. I hope entering the issue in the comment for one person (the married toddler for example, or the 84 year old lady coal miner) is enough to get the whole page sorted out.

I have a 3 x g grandaunt named....
Philadelphia Duff b 1801 (Edinburgh)

I have no info. except her parents Alexander & Elizabeth Paterson (mother's m/s Anderson)

It would be great to know where the name came from  ???

Annie

I have a 4g grandmother named Delphy. She was christened Adelphia and after a lot of digging I discovered her father's oldest sister was Philadelphia.  I was able convince myself that one of her daughters really did get on a wagon train to Utah in 1853 because said daughter named her own daughter Delphia. I have the impression that none of these people were literate hence the variations.
