Nottinghamshire / Fred HALL of Southwell
« on: Thursday 25 June 09 20:22 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find more information about my grandmother's uncle but since he has a common name, it's proving very difficult to find anything about him. Does anyone have any ideas of how I could find out more about this family?:

Fred HALL (b. 1889, Southwell, Notts.)
Married to "Peggy". Fred was unmarried in 1911, living in Southwell. We know Peggy died age 31 of cancer, so they probably married not too long after 1911.
Fred & Peggy had a daughter and son, "Dinky" and Percy. Any ideas for what "Dinky" could be short for because I can't find a Dinky Hall birth anywhere??? Unfortunately I don't know exactly when Dinky and Percy were born but it should have been between 1911 and 1920.

Thanks,
Alexander

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / 1841 census lookup please - BRUMMITT
« on: Sunday 21 June 09 23:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I have been looking for the following family in 1841 without any success.

William Brummitt (b. c.1798)
Sarah (c. 1796)
George (1823)
Harriett (1825)
John (1827)
Henry (1829)
Sophia (1832)
Ann (1834)
William (1837)
Samuel (1839)

All children were born and baptised at Warsop, Notts. William & Sarah and sons Wm, Geo and Sam are living in Warsop in 1851. Some of the other children may have died.

The son Henry "Harry" Brummitt MIGHT have been my ancestor, but I haven't been able to find him in any census since he died age 31 in 1858, so maybe this is the right family.

Thanks for any help,
Alexander

« on: Sunday 21 June 09 16:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi, my grandparents have this photo in their posession but nobody knows who it is or where it came from. All my grandparents' family comes from Nottinghamshire, England, and it looks like it could have been taken there, but I have no clue what kind of date the photo might have been taken at? If anyone recognizes any of the faces, let me know -- but I realise that is a very very long shot. Any help much appreciated.

Thanks,

Nottinghamshire / Laxton WWII bombing & School
« on: Sunday 21 June 09 00:51 BST (UK)  »
I am researching the village of Laxton, Nottinghamshire where my grandfather lives and where his mother's ancestors had lived since the sixteenth century. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the WWII bombing that occurred in Laxton village near the start of the war? My grandfather told me that Miss Willis, the schoolteacher, was killed when the school house was hit as she was taking her shopping in. I just checked the CWGC website and found that a Ruth Barbara Potter Willis, a civilian was killed 28.8.1940 at School House, Laxton. This gives me a date but more info about what happened would be fantastic.

Also when I visited Laxton I noticed that there is the old school house near the post office is literally falling apart. You can see right through the wall facing the street. Not sure if the was the school house that was bombed, but it definately looks like it has been. Does anyone know when this was being used as a school house because I think there might have been another place that the older children went? Did the school keep any records of students, etc.?

Thanks,
Alexander

Surrey Lookup Requests / FRANCIS marriage near Tooting
« on: Tuesday 16 June 09 00:58 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the marriage of Thomas FRANCIS to Sophia. Their first child (of 11) was born on 8 Jul 1811 in Tooting, Surrey, being baptised 4 Aug 1811 at St. Leonards, Streatham. All eleven children were born and baptised there, right up to the last one born in 1833. All the birthdates and baptisms come from the IGI since I'm not able to look at the registers. But there is no marriage for Thomas and his wife Sophia so any help in locating a marriage for them aroung 1810 would be very much appreciated.

Thanks, Alexander

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / Edward BUTCHER of Ripley?
« on: Monday 15 June 09 02:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I have been stuck on my ggg grandfather's line for ages, and even though I now know his father's name I have not been able to get much further on it. His name was Edward Butcher, and he was born about 1841. I have found him in 1861, where he was a hosier's assistant in Marylebone, Middlesex, and by the time he married in 1865 he was still living at the same address (164 Oxford St). I have been able to trace him in every census since then, living with his wife Elizabeth, until his death in 1922 in Laxton, Nottinghamshire. He was very consistant with his age and birthplace. Every census gave a birth year around 1840-1841 and a birthplace of Ripley, Surrey. But I can't find a birth or baptism in that area, and I can't find him prior to 1861. The 1865 marriage certificate states that his father was another Edward Butcher, a Merchant's Clerk. The witnesses at the wedding were William Charles Winterburn and Jane Elizabeth Winterburn, but no known relation to the Butchers.

I've got stuck and I don't know where to turn now. Any help or ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Alexander

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Thomas TRIPPET of Southwell, Notts.
« on: Monday 08 June 09 01:10 BST (UK)  »
I am researching one of my ancestors named Thomas Trippet who lived in Southwell for much of his life it seems. His daughter, Elizabeth (b. 1766, Southwell) married John Briggs, my ancestor. Elizabeth had three brothers (William, John & Thomas) all born in Southwell in the 1760s & 70s. Thomas's (Sr) wife was named Sarah, but I haven't been able to find any marriage record for them.

I had just about given up on the Trippets when I googled them and came up with a hit in an old book online called The history of Southwell, in the county of Nottingham, its hamlets and vicinage which had been published in 1818. In the section on longevity, under the "Aged persons now resident in Southwell", it says: Thomas Trippet, 86. This is almost surely my Thomas. I have not found any birth or death for Thomas, so if anyone had access to a Notts burial index or something could they please lookup a death of Thomas Trippet sometime around 1818. This makes the birth year for Thomas around 1732 (assuming the book was published near to when the ages were taken). Any help in finding a birth/baptism for him would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Ireland / FRECKNALL/FRECKNELL family in Ireland
« on: Thursday 28 May 09 23:01 BST (UK)  »
I am researching the surname Frecknall and some of my relatives went to Ireland in the 1870s I think. Their names were Henry Frecknall (or Frecknell) and his wife Lavinia Milton. Henry was from England and Lavinia from Canada (they got married in Montreal, Canada in 1863 while Henry was a soldier. Their children were:

(Stephen) Henry Frecknell (b. c.1865, Canada)
(John) William "Willie" Frecknell (b. c. 1867, Canada)
Ann M Frecknell (b. c.1869, New Brunswick, Canada)
Albert Edward Frecknell (b. c. 1871)
Lavinia Marian Frecknell (b. 1873, Weymouth, Dorset, England)
Chrisopher Frecknell (b. 25 Dec 1875, Dublin, Ireland) - according to the IGI.

I was wondering what records might exist that could help me research this family? I have looked for census  records for this period without success. Are there any passenger lists from Canada or England to Ireland? I haven't used Irish records before so I'm a complete novice.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks!
Alexander
