Lanarkshire / Lookup Request - Scottish Landowners 1873. John Stewart
« on: Friday 12 June 09 12:34 BST (UK)  »
As per the previous post, could someone with a subscription please tell me the details for the single entry for John Stewart Lanark in the Scottish Landowners records on familyrelatives.com?

many many thanks

C

Edited to add - I'm trying to work out if "my" John Stewart (1809-1887) owned the farm he was farming. If not, then the family moving wholesale into Glasgow a few years after his death (sometime after the 1891 census) makes more sense.

Lanarkshire / John Stewart 1881 - 1934 ? can't find death or 1901 census
« on: Tuesday 09 June 09 17:46 BST (UK)  »
yup, me again

my Great Grandfather is causing me problems, I have his birth and marriage records.
B 20 apr 1881    32 Glasgow Rd Rutherglen to William STEWART and Elizabeth STEWART (Ne CRAIG)

on the 1891 census at Greenleeshill farm (which, for anyone following my seach is no surprise)

Married Helen Watson BURNS on 5 Oct 1906 , his address is shown as 76 Horne St. His profession is shown as an Iron turner (journeyman).

in the 1901 census, the rest of the family ARE shown at 76 Horne St, but not John. (unless, as usual, I'm missing something obvious, again)

I've been told he died in 1934, but can't corroborate that and I cannot find a death cert on SP, due to the common nature of the name, (even just in my family we are littered with John Stewarts) in the search results, nothing QUITE matches.

So, if anyone could assist me in the search for him on the 1901 and/or the death cert, I'd be massively thankful.

(and this is just the Stewart side, I've my mother's side to come yet, and that takes me into England and to Co Down (so far))

Lyne,

Thanks for that, initial look through wasn't fruitful, but it's a fantastic resource, thanks

no lair numbers as, for now, I'm not even sure they are there..though it's likely
I haven't come across any burial reference on the death certs, but the bulk of my family post 1840 were in very close proximity in that area.

I'll have to see if anyone is able to look in the Mitchell for me, as I'm in Berkshire and only get back to Glasgow once or twice a year at most.

I remember how big Sighthill is as my grandparents used to take my brother and I up there/Springburn park when we were wee.

I can't remember if we ever had any graves pointed out to us though :(

Thanks for the help so far though.

Would burials in from around 1840-1940 have tended to be in Sighthill or elsewhere (Necropolis ? somewhere else?)

A large part of my family on both sides lived in Petershill Rd, Keppochhill Rd, and the surrounding areas, I've seen most of the death certificates, so I know place of death, what I'm not sure is how to start checking burials from this period and then which cemetery I should be searching.

Thanks nel,

I'm really rather new to FH research and have only really used SP and Ancestry so far, so I need to learn a lot more about the other resources available.

*need to be more thorough when checking census..note to self*

Lanarkshire / Re: morgan street

from a google search.. a qoute...

"Born 1967, Ross Hospital Paisley. Lived on Morgan Street in Govan Hill until I was 4. Moved to Croftfoot, where I went to Croftfoot Primary and Kingspark SS until we immigrated to Canada in 1981. "

So there was a Morgan Street in Govan Hill until at least 1971, looking at the ariel, Morgan Mews is a recent redevelopment. having grown up in and around Glasgow in the 70's and 80's I know how much has changed, and even more so on my rare visits back...

so...I think your Morgan Street would be in Govan Hill, just need to find an old map to corroborate

Hello Caroline
I have William Stewart and Helen Hamilton on my tree, their daughter Janet married Robert Young in 1851 and he was a farmer at Greenlees Farm Cambuslang.  I don't have much info but if you want what I have send me a PM.
Susan

Thank you, Susan...
I THINK Greenlees farm was just to the North of Greenleeshill farm, (now under the golf course)..so they would be neighbouring.

PM Sent
