Can anyone decipher the surname on this 1622 will and where she is located? It is supposed to be the will of Elizabeth Merry (or a derivation of MERRY) of Levisham; but it sure doesn't look anything like that to me. The will listing has two different volume/folios shown. This one is 38/37...another is 38/46. The 38/46 is clearly MERRY.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help with tricky Latin document
« on: Monday 24 April 17 22:39 BST (UK)  »
We think this documents some work performance problems of Robert Lynas in 1691. Unfortunately, it is all in Latin and the original was so large a file that I have to upload it as 2 halves. Sorry, but couldn't figure out a better way to display it. If someone can help with the Latin transcription, it would be most appreciated.

The Common Room / Married or not? Allegation vs Bond
« on: Tuesday 11 April 17 18:24 BST (UK)  »
I have attached what I thought was a Marriage Allegation for the couple in 1665; but someone has told me it looks more like a Marriage Bond which does not, necessarily mean the marriage ever took place. Here's where I am confused and ask for help:

This would have been the 3rd marriage of Joseph Merry.

Marriage #1 Ellen in 1652. An unborn infant dies in 1653. Then Ellen dies during the birth of a daughter in 1655 (who later dies Feb 1659).

Marriage #2 Apr 1659 Katherine Kirkeup (both widows). But she dies in Sep 1665 (no issue found).

Marriage #3 (?) 1665 Paver's Marriage Licenses has him marrying Catherine Hovington at Yapham. He is age 46, agriculturer; she a spinster age 20. No PR found for this marriage which makes me wonder if it really took place. Because....then in 1668...

Marriage #4 (or #3) Oct 1668 Joseph marries Isabell Skelton ( and they go on to have at least 4 children before Joseph dies in 1680.

Anyone willing to weigh in on poor Joseph's unlucky marital life?? Or are there really two DIFFERENT Joseph's marrying at the same time in the same place.

Thanks for your comments.

This marriage of Joseph Merry and Katherine Kirkeup shows them both widows; he of Snainton and she of "the same". Do I read "late of Brompton"? Also, does the last line read "in the presence of Richard Merry" and then it appears to say Francis Skelton...but then something about "wife" . I'm confused!!

Thanks,

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1665 Marriage Allegation in Latin
« on: Monday 10 April 17 19:21 BST (UK)  »
Can someone please transcribe this first bit of the marriage allegation between Joseph Merry of Snainton in Yorkshire and Catherine Hovington. I'm hoping it has something more than what the rest of the document entails. Thanks,
