Armed Forces / Gleeson Family (completed)
« on: Wednesday 10 August 11 17:06 BST (UK)  »
Am trying to establish if there is a family relationship between the 3 Gleesons below, I believe that they are a father and 2 sons but with one possible son born in Ireland and none together on any census its quite difficult - but hoping rootschatters can do their stuff:

Patrick Gleeson, born 1836 (Thurles, Ireland) joined 47th Regt. Foot 1854 and was eventually discharged from the service in Fermoy Ireland in 1876 as a Staff Sergeant.
Patrick married a Margaret Foote in Chelsea barracks in 1858.

Andrew Fitzwilliam Gleeson, born 1860 Aldershot.  when discharged from the Service (RASC) in 1920 he was a Quartermaster and Hon. Lt.Col and been awarded an OBE.

Patrick John Gleeson born 1862 Ireland was KIA in Naauwpoort SA in 1900 at which time he was a Quartermaster & Hon.Lt. in the RASC.

Any help appreciated.

Somerset / Matilda CARTER 1851 Bathwick
« on: Tuesday 09 August 11 13:40 BST (UK)  »
We have a Matilda Carter birth registered 1851 at Bathwick with a mother Hulbert (from bathbmd).  We have Matilda on the 1851 census as 'under month old' & 'a visitor' in Paulton with a Carter family but no sign of the mother.  We have Matilda on each census and up to her subsequent death in 1932 as Matilda Challenger.

There is no sign of a Carter/Hulbert marriage being registered and no obvious sign of the mother at any time.  The Bathwick parish registers are only transcribed online upto1840.

Does anyone have any access to post 1840 registers that could check for a Carter/Hulbert marriage.

Cork / Donovan/McCarthy marriage 1788
« on: Wednesday 06 July 11 12:30 BST (UK)  »
Have found a marriage between John Donovan & Margaret McCarthy in Charleville Co.Cork  Jul 1788.  Unfortunately no christian names given for fathers of groom or bride.  However in the notes is written "John Donovan and Margaret McCarthy were discharged by the RD Mr Edmond Donegan" -  can anyone advise what this means?

Cork / Ford/Corkery marriage
« on: Wednesday 06 July 11 00:12 BST (UK)  »
Have found a marriage for a John Ford(e) and Juliana Moriarty 9 Aug 1803 in Macroom Co.Cork.

John Ford parents given as Denis Ford & Margaret Corkery.  This information from the Rootsireland site.

However I can't find a birth for John nor a marriage for Denis & Margaret - I make the assumption that they may be from South Cork which is not included on rootsireland as yet.

Really pleased to get this far back - but does anyone have any access to South Cork records to keep the ball rolling.

Thanks

Armed Forces / Deciphering Army Record
« on: Saturday 16 April 11 11:48 BST (UK)  »
Have just found my wifes grandfathers army record 1895 to 1903.  He was with the SWB and travelled to Gibralter for one year 1896/1879 but did the remainder of his time in India.

I can make out most of the record but the attached page is giving me problems.

on the 16/5/98 he was granted something, but I can't make out what?

on the 1/6/98 it looks like"Elected to come under the Regulations Governing ***** Allowances etc"  I cant make out what this says or means.

16/3/1903  he was granted something?
19/5/1905  he forfeited something?

Any help appreciated

World War One / Help Decipher Discharge paper
« on: Tuesday 12 April 11 20:58 BST (UK)  »
My father joined the South Wales Borderers 3rd Battalion in Feb 1918.  He then went to France later in 1918.  However the 3rd Battalion were the training and reserve battalion which did not serve abroad.  I don't know which battalion he left with/joined.

There is some hand writing on the discharge section which I can't decipher, it looks like "Para Bqn (    ) KR or RR".  I am hoping it will give an indication of his battalion/unit, but it may be some general information.  I thought if it were RR it would be Rest & Recperation?  Any help appreciated.
