There are displays on lacemaking in several of the local museums, including at Olney and Buckinghamshire.

Thank you I don’t think I’m going to get up to Buckinghamshire in the very near future but I will bear that in mind.

There appear to be a number of sites via Google for "lacemaking in Buckinghamshire" but these look interesting.

https://cowperandnewtonmuseum.org.uk/lacemaking/#:~:text=The%20Lace%20Industry,came%20in%201563%20to%201568.

Thank you Bumble B definitely more interesting than the sites that came up for me and at least they give some idea of what the industry was about.

Buckinghamshire / lacemaking in Wendover
« on: Sunday 27 November 22 14:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Just wondering if anyone knows of a good online source of information about the lace making industry in Bucks, in particular Wendover in the 18th century.  Google is bringing up lots of modern 'buy lace dresses' websites and nothing of any use.

I discovered two families the Atkins and the Dixons who seemed to be lacemen and wondered if I could find out anything about the industry they would have been involved. in

Thank you  Kerry

Hi Diana

I think we may have been in contact at some point over the intervening years since I originally posted this.  I agree with what you say about Hannah.  I’ve recently been looking into Elizabeth Harriet’s occupation of The Three Cups pub near Punnetts Town and discovered that Richard junior, the only child of Hannah and Richard’s marriage that is known about had the tenancy before Elizabeth.  Who did you do your dna test with?  I tested with Living dna but have not been through my matches properly yet.

Just saw the death certificate of son Samuel Gaines Sturt, his wife/widow gave the information says his father as Samuel Sturt born East Hoyley Sussex (Hoathly)

ADDED
In 1860 age 39 (Stort) he is listed as a Shoemaker born England that fits with the Samuel of 1841 married to Ann.

Just downloaded a copy of that death certificate, it seems to be true then, he went to the US and married again, and Ann called herself a widow.

Looking at the internet, Gaius appears to be a name that meant something to the family (at least the Sturt families in America).

Here in Sussex it means something to non conformist families, I have a x2 great grandfather Gaius Diana Winchester!  As the Sturt family seem to use non conformist chapels on and off its not that surprising.  I must check out the death of the son though as I've not seen that record before.

Solved the issue of John Terry, he was born about 1837 and on the 1841 and 1851 census is with his grandparents Samuel and Judith Terry in Hailsham.  In 1861 in barracks in Birmingham and 1871 back home with his aunt, Mary.

As to the marriages, I think the Brighton marriage is the correct one.  I found banns for the couple in Lewes in August 1841.  My thinking is that with the children born to them before their marriage, they wanted to marry away from people who knew them or maybe family were trying to stop the marriage.

What an intriguing family!  Did he run away to America, marry again and behave like a totally different person?

Got a bit sidetracked and found a newspaper article from 29 April 1851 stating he was up in Court in Eastbourne for assaulting a grocer in a beer house in Hailsham.  The defendant (Sturt) was said to be a married man with a large family.  He seduced a young girl under the age of 15.  Sturt struck him (Mark Wenham, the grocer) when he went to get him out the privy where he had spent the night with the young girl.  Sturt was guilty and taken to Lewes gaol, Ann followed and paid the fine.  (Silly woman!)

The paper noted he was taken to court only five weeks previous for assaulting his wife, Ann and was sent to gaol for 2 months.  Hmmmm
