Yorkshire (West Riding) / William Henry WALKER Marriage to Hannah WRIGHT
« on: Monday 26 June 17 10:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have a bit of a problem (Don't we all!!) I have a William Henry WALKER who was born circa 1852 at Halifax. His parents were Thomas Beresford WALKER and Charlotte BUERGIN. In looking for his marriage I came across 1). William Henry WALKER married to Hannah WRIGHT 2nd Quarter 1872 at Halifax and 2). William WALKER married to Hannah WRIGHT 4th Quarter 1867 at Guisborough.

I found on the 1911 Census a William Henry WALKER married to Hannah and they were married for 38 years, which points to the 1872 marriage at Halifax. But there is still doubt as to which marriage is correct.

It seems too much a coincidence that two William WALKER's married to a girl with exactly the same name. But there again in family history there are so many anomalies and coincidences and strange goings on!!

Can anyone make sense of it? I would be very grateful for any help and suggestions.

Regards,

Margaret

Thanks Jen, Forfarian and Kenjo, for all the help and advice you gave. I am certain that I now have my GGG Grandparents.

Alexander HENDERSON and Elizabeth BROWN were the right ones.

It is amazing that a little snippet of information by a few people can lead to a successful "find" and a brick wall comes tumbling down! Thank you all!!

Hi Jennywren,

Thanks for your reply.

The full text for the OPR Birth for John HENDERSON is:   John Henderson, Labourer, King Street Road, and his Spouse Catharine Mortimer, had a son born on the 19th January 1848, name John, baptized by the Rev. M. Smith, in presence of Alexander and David Henderson.

This was in Old Machar.

You mention that there were not many David HENDERSON's around Aberdeenshire in 1841/1851. If that is the case then it should be possible to find out which David was related to John.....??

Thanks again, Jen.  (Think we have corresponded before?)

Forfarian,

The reason why I thought that John HENDERSON was born circa 1818 in Aberdeenshire is because
on the burial record for John HENDERSON, 1848, it stated his age at death was 30, therefore I assumed that he was born circa 1818, presumably in Aberdeenshire as his wife Catharine was born at Rayne, and they were married at New Machar. Stated on OPR Marriage "both in this Parish and were proclaimed three times".

He was a road contractor according to his daughter's marriage cert. But she probably embellished his occupation, and he more likely was a labourer doing road work.

Everything that happened during his short life happened in Aberdeenshire, but nevertheless he may have been born elsewhere, but it all points to Aberdeenshire......assuming?? Hope not!

Hi Kenjo,

Thanks. Yes Jane Ann / Jean married John LILLIE in 1870 and on her Marriage Cert she stated that her father was John HENDERSON (deceased) and her mother was Catharine MORTIMER.

They went on to have 4 children and the 4th one, James became a fireman based in Aberdeen and then married and emigrated to America. All four children married.

Thanks Forfarian and Kenjo

I have the 1851, 1861, 1871, and 1881 Census.

The 1851 census has a child named Jean age 6. Therefore born circa 1845. I am thinking that this child would be Jane Ann.

In 1853 Catharine had a child, Alexander, from John SKINNER and a further child, James, in 1860 from the same person. John and Catharine did not marry.

Both birth certs state John SKINNER as the father.

Thanks Forfarian for the info.
I have the OPR Marriage for John and his wife Catherine MORTIMER which was at Old Machar 10 December 1846.
John HENDERSON died and was buried at Old Machar 12 December 1848 (OPR Death 168/B 210 538 [ScotlandsPeople]). His place of residence at the time was Bridge of Don.

I also have the Marriage of his daughter Jane Anne HENDERSON in St. Nicholas Aberdeen to John LILLIE 2 July 1870 where she states her father was John HENDERSON, a Road Contractor, (deceased) and mother Catherine MORTIMER.

I cannot find Jane Anne's birth.

John and Catharine had a son John who was born 19 January 1848 married Jessie Ann MORRISON 1 July 1871 at St. Nicholas, Aberdeen. The Witnesses were Alexander and David HENDERSON. Have to find out who they were...maybe uncles?? No, I won't assume!

Much to search for.

Thanks again.

Aberdeenshire / Birth of John HENDERSON

Hi,

I am trying to find the parents of my GG Grandfather John HENDERSON, who was born circa 1818 in Aberdeenshire. So far I have a choice of three sets of parents for him. (1) Alexander HENDERSON and Elizabeth BROWN, at Belhelvie 20 March 1818; (2) John HENDERSON and Mary COUTTS, at Auchindoir and Kearn 20 March 1818; (3) John HENDERSON and Isabel WHYTE, at Rathen 9 June 1818.  He died 12 December 1848 and was buried in the Churchyard of Old Machar. The OPR death did not reveal who his parents were. He was married to Catherine MORTIMER 10 December 1846 at New Machar.
Has anyone any suggestions where I can find which set of parents are his? (The dates of 20 March 1818 are not misprints! Just coincidence!).

Margaret

Letthemeatcakes,

Thanks for the info. I will have to go to the Greffe and ask to look through their archives. IF they will let me make a search - probably not, knowing them! No harm in asking though!

Kind regards,

Margaret
