Many of my MacDonald ancestors lived on Heisker. The info I have originated with Bill Lawson himself. Perhaps an email to him at his website or to Co Leis Thu might help.

To Gemma,

I don't know if it's your family but I have a reference to a John Sinclair (christened 15Oct1721 in Canisbay) married to a Bess Rosie. John's parents were William Sinclair & Margaret Sinclair. Bess' parents were Alexander Rosie & Margaret Kennedy.

The children of John & Bess were Catherine (b1750), William (b1753), Mary (b1760), Alexander (b1763), Walter (b1765) and John (b1768).

Only further info I have is on Catherine's & Walter's line

Thanks for looking James,

The Hessons arrived in Upper Canada in 1842. The 1851 census has them living on Conc 5 W 1/2 lot 6 of Williamsburg, Dundas County.
Origin is Ireland and religion is Presbyterian.
The 1861 census has them living on conc. 8 lot 30 in Osnabruck. Mary Ann is gone from this census.

I think Hugh must have married her shortly before 1861 as the two of them show up in the 1860 US census for Madrid , N.Y. They were there from 1860 - 1864. Land records show Hugh purchasing the lot in Osnabruck in 1861 from a Francis Campbell.

Hugh's trade was a mason and he reportedly fell and permanently injured himself while working on a church steeple. He died 12Feb1893 in Grantley, Osnabruck.

The reason I thought of a Glengarry Lochaber connection is that I have a close DNA match to a documented McMillan from there.

VBAIN,

Arthur was the 10th of 12 children of Hugh and Mary Ann. Their children's lines are well documented.

cheers all,

Bruce MacMillan

Maybe you can help me with a brick wall. In 1861 my gg-grandfather Hugh McMillan, lived in Stormont County, S1/2, Lot 30, Conc. VIII. The Belden Atlas has him listed as H. McMullen, living next to James & Sam Hesson. Hugh marries James daughter Mary Ann Hesson.

On all the census forms he only says he was born in Scotland around 1819. When he came to Canada I do not know. I thought he would want to be near fellow clansmen in Glengarry but with most land already occupied he had chosen nearby Stormont.

Ideally I'd like to find out when he immigrated and if he was related to any of the Lochabar McMillans in Glengarry and when he married Mary Ann. Looking at all the online records I cannot find any info on their marriage (Protestant).

Would you have access to any local records that may help?

thanks very much

Bruce

Thank you both for your replies.

I will follow up on the links you posted, BallyaltikilliganG

The names listed in early posts don't appear in any of the Hesson family names I have.

I think the 1796 Flax growers list is the best best. Although they are earlier than my Hessons they could be direct ancestors as the list gives the names William, Samuel, James, Hugh & Alexander. My gg-grandfather was James Hesson and his sons' names were Samuel, James & William with Hugh & Alexander appearing as grandchildren.

With them being Protestant I suspect Desertmartin in Derry is a good place to start.

I've been able to find references in various census for the Hessons and for Hugh & Mary Ann after they were married. Their first three children were born in Madrid, New York so I know they lived there from 1858 to 1862. They then moved back to Ontario. Their next was born in Stormont. I'm sure they were married before they moved from Ontario and the land registry shows Hugh owning property in Stormont while they were in New York. I'm assuming then that the marriage was shortly before 1858 as Mary Ann would be about 19 or 20 years old.

Hugh has always been an enigma. There is no birth record, immigration record or marriage record than I can find. It's like he's one of the first in the witness protection program :)

Ireland / Hesson family
« on: Wednesday 02 September 09 16:41 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying  to locate where in Ireland my ancestors came from. James Hesson, born ~1798 married to Elizabeth Crossen (Crewson) born ~1812. Their first three children were born in Ireland; June (Jane) born ~1831, Samuel born ~1833 and Mary Ann born ~1837.

They left Ireland for Canada sometime between 1841 & 1843.

The Canadian census lists them as Presbyterians. I found a James Hesson on the 1796 flax growers list but it's just a name, no other info.

thanks

Canada Lookup Request / Hesson/McMillan marriage in Osnabruck
« on: Wednesday 02 September 09 16:31 BST (UK)  »
Trying to locate any marriage info on my gg-grandmother/father. Mary Ann Hesson, born ~1837 in Ireland, daughter of James & Elizabeth Hesson, married Hugh McMillan, born ~1820 in Scotland, all of Osnabruck, Ontario. Family lore has date of 1857 but this isn't confirmed by any documentation. She was Presbyterian and he was Methodist. Her family immigrated around 1842.

I've found various spellings of their names in some census such as Hessin, McMullen, McMillen.

thanks all for the help. This would make him my grandmother's brother.  I agree that highland dress hasn't changed much over the years.

It would still be nice to date the photo studio. I'll be contacting the Lochgilphead council for advice.
