Joseph Dodd was born 1846 in Tushingham, Cheshire and baptised in Malpas. He was in Tilston, Cheshire in 1851 then Tunstall, Staffordshire in 1861 with his parents Thomas Dodd and Emma. He married Jane Elizabeth Shaw in 1866 in Newchapel, Staffordshire. He was a collier. They had two children, Joseph Dodd in 1867 and Mary Jane Dodd in 1869.

I can't find him on the 1871 census, he wasn't with his young family. Jane, Joseph (Jr) and Mary Jane were living with Jane's parents John and Hannah Shaw in Chell. Jane's status was married and she was working in a pottery warehouse.

In 1876 Jane married Joseph Wood in Burslem. Her name was written as "Jane Dowell", she was widowed, her age and her father's name and occupation were all correct. She signed her name with an X so I can only assume that the surname of Dowell was down to a mishearing.

I have been unable to find a death or burial record for Joseph Dodd nor can I find him on any censuses after 1861.

Can anyone spot something I've missed? He's a bit of a puzzle.

Hannah Shaw, born 1826 in Tunstall or Wolstanton
Jane Elizabeth Shaw, born 1844 in Tunstall
John Shaw, born 1846 in Tunstall
William Shaw, born 1850 in Tunstall

John and Hannah (Booth) married in Wolstanton in 1842 and the family were living in Pitts Hill and Chell in 1861 and 1871, John was a coal miner. I have been unable to spot them in 1851 but think they should be in the same area.

Hi, I wasn't sure where to post this.

I have a query about the significance of two surnames being given in a baptismal record. An ancestor of mine was baptised in Audlem, Cheshire in 1796. The parish register entry is-

September 11. Elizabeth, daughter of James Chelton and Mary Jackson, christened.

When Elizabeth married in 1820 she married as Elizabeth Jackson. When she married again in 1847 she married under her surname from the first marriage (Griffiths) and named her father as James Chelton.

I haven't found a marriage record for Elizabeth's parents. Do the different surnames show that they weren't married? I haven't seen this before in my family research, where a child was born out of marriage the father wasn't named, and the word "illegitimate" was written on the entry, that's missing here. If Elizabeth was illegitimate, does the naming of her father imply that he acknowledged her?

Asylum records.

Hi, does anybody visit Nottinghamshire Archives please? I am trying to find out what happened to my Great-Great Grandmother Lilian Sharman (nee Griffiths) born 1870 in Hanley, Staffordshire. She disappeared after her husband and father-in-law died within a week of each other in 1899, leaving her very young son and daughter (my Great-Grandmother) to be raised by aunts and uncles. I was told that she couldn't cope and ran away, and, with the help of a poster on here, was directed to a record in the 1901 census that may be Lilian in the Nottingham County Asylum-

L. S. born 1870 in Longton, Staffordshire, resident patient.

Would anybody be willing to have a quick look in the Archives next time they are there to find out what L. S's name is please?

I would be very grateful for help, it's a mystery as to what happened to Lilian, I can't see that she remarried nor find a death record or see her in the 1911 census and I would love to let her Grandchildren know what became of her as there is still some anger at her abandoning their mother.

I was wondering if anyone can help please? I have recently discovered that my GGG Grandparents, David and Olive Boulton emmigrated from Stoke-on-Trent, England to Missouri via New Orleans in 1849. I have found them, and their 3 children listed on the 1850 census, but I don't have access to look at the imagery so I don't know much more. They are listed in St Louis County, Missouri. I would be really, really grateful if anyone can give me the details of where they were living and what occupation David had.

David Boulton (transcribed as Davis on the index I've seen) born 1820, England
Olive Boulton, born 1821, England
Mariah Boulton, born 1842, England
James Boulton, born 1846, England
Mary A Boulton, born 1848, England

I had absolutely no idea that they'd undertaken such a journey, as far as I knew my family had remained in the same area for generations, so this is a great surprise. The Boulton family didn't stay for long in the United States as they were back in Stoke-on-Trent by 1854 where their other children were born. I would really love to know more about their time there.
