Herefordshire Lookup Requests / Leominster records- SHARMAN, DURHAM
« on: Thursday 21 June 12 21:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi, does anybody visit the Herefordshire county records office? I would be really grateful to know if my ancestors are in the registers for Leominster-

Robert Sharman born about 1750. He married in 1771 in Leominster so it is likely he was from there. However, the name Sharman is not very common in Herefordshire so he may have come from another county.

I would also like to know if Elizabeth Durham was baptised in Leominster. She would have been born around 1755. She had children baptised in Leominster from 1776 onwards.

Thanks very much to anyone who can help!

US Lookup Requests / Boultons in St. Louis County, Missouri
« on: Sunday 30 October 11 18:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can help please? I have recently discovered that my GGG Grandparents, David and Olive Boulton emmigrated from Stoke-on-Trent, England to Missouri via New Orleans in 1849. I have found them, and their 3 children listed on the 1850 census, but I don't have access to look at the imagery so I don't know much more. They are listed in St Louis County, Missouri. I would be really, really grateful if anyone can give me the details of where they were living and what occupation David had.

Their names were-

David Boulton (transcribed as Davis on the index I've seen) born 1820, England
Olive Boulton, born 1821, England
Mariah Boulton, born 1842, England
James Boulton, born 1846, England
Mary A Boulton, born 1848, England

I had absolutely no idea that they'd undertaken such a journey, as far as I knew my family had remained in the same area for generations, so this is a great surprise. The Boulton family didn't stay for long in the United States as they were back in Stoke-on-Trent by 1854 where their other children were born. I would really love to know more about their time there.

Thanks,

Zoe

Wow, thank you so much for all of that information! That's really wonderful of you. I had looked at the IGI on Sunday and noticed that same discrepancy with the two Samuels born to a Samuel and a Fanny, and the older Samuel still being alive on the censuses. I know from past experience that the IGI is not always to be trusted so I kept a note to check it at some point, but you have done it for me! Thank you so much. It could well be that it is an error in the transcripts.

The David Boulton in the will sounds likely to be who I am looking for, it was not a common name and the geographical area fits. Also David's first born son was called James, which admittedly is not much to go on, but given that the later Boultons were very repetitive in their naming patterns, the oldest children always being named for family, I believe there should be a James amongst David's siblings or uncles as there are none amongst his wife's family. I've checked the IGI again and there are baptismal records on there for a Thomas (bapt. 26th May 1805, Burslem) and Joseph (bapt. 26th May 1805, Burslem) born to Samuel Boulton and Fanny/Frances, but not for John and James, their records could be missing. I shall try to trace them in the censuses to see if that sheds any light.

The timing of David possibly coming into a bit of money is interesting. David Boulton and his family lived in Hanley, but by the 1871 census they'd moved to Hartshill where they remained until my Grandfather Boulton got married. If he had been left some money, I'm sure that would have facilitated the move there, David didn't appear to be well off on previous censuses. I don't know how true it is, but I was told that Hartshill was a desirable commuter village for potters so I'd imagine he'd have needed more money than he earned to live there.

Anyway, I've written quite an essay. Thank you so much for looking for my family, I am really, really  grateful. If you ever need any records looking up for Warwickshire let me know!

Best wishes,

Zoe

Hi Zen rabbit, ah thank you so much. I'd be very grateful if you found anything out, don't go out of your way though! Thanks for the info on the Samuel who left a will, I've had a look and yes you're right, he's only a few years older than David. Thanks again for your help.

Sorry for the delay in replying. Thank you both for your responses! David Boulton lived in Nelson Place after he married, I've just checked and that was very close to Northwood. I hadn't thought of the Burslem registers, or of checking for a will- I'd assumed he didn't have money to leave, but I'll look into that. I had hoped to find out without a Record Office visit as I live a distance away and work long hours. But if I can't then I shall certainly head there when I have some holiday. Thanks again!

I'd really like to find my Great-Great-Great Grandfather's baptismal record so I discover his mother's name. My ancestor was David Boulton, born 1821-ish in Hanley. According to his marriage record David's father was Samuel Boulton, occupation "potter's turner". David had married by 1841 and was living with his wife Olive (nee Williamson) and her parents, so I've not found any records of him with his parents.

Are there parish records for Hanley that are available to buy? I know some of the registers were destroyed during the Chartist Riots, but I believe the ones for the 1820s should still be in existence.

Hope someone can help.

Thank you.

World War One / Re: WW1 Death- Sharman

Thank you all for your help! Yes, you are quite right, it does say "Died" in his listing on Soldiers Who Died in the Great War. I was told that he died at the Battle of Hill 60, the medal he was awarded was supposed to have had that written on it, although I don't remember seeing it, but when I decided to look into what his Battalion did, Hill 60 wasn't involved! Anyway, that's solved a mystery. Thank you all, again, for you help.

World War One / WW1 Death- Sharman
« on: Sunday 19 June 11 15:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can help please. I'd like to find out what happened to a Great-Uncle of mine. I was told that he died in action in WW1, but I can't tell from the websites that I've looked at whether he was in action around the time of his death.

His name was George Edgar Sharman, of 1/5 Battalion, North Staffordshire Regiment. He died on 6th September 1915. I'd be very grateful if anyone could shed any light for me, his entry in the British Commonwealth War Graves Registers doesn't reveal much.

Thank you.
