Sussex / Help - Lewes removal order 1821 Best family
« on: Tuesday 22 June 10 09:29 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Hoping for some advice about Lewes quarter sessions records.

CD East Sussex Removal Orders has;
Lewes St John sub Castro, 21 Jan 1821
BEST, James, wife Ann; Mary 4, Thomas 2, Anna 7 months; QS/O confirming [removal] Par 412/32/2/8 Beeding.

I understand that before a removal was ordered the head of the family underwent a settlement examination at the local quarter session to find out the parish responsible for him/her and the information in it can be very helpful to the family historian, (and I need it!).

I have been trying to find if the quarter session with the settlement examination or just the settlement examination of James Best has survived but with no success.  I could find nothing on the access to archives page or ESRO, but that's not to say it isn't there  ::)

I found an old (locked) Rootschat posting by Chris in 1066 land that mentioned he had East Sussex Quarter Sessions 1810-1854, but as I'm almost competely bamboozled now, I don't know whether this would be a help or not  :-[

Help or advice or both would be great,
Mo

Hi,

I reckon you might be a relative then because most of John's children were born at Deloraine and he had grandchildren born at Port Sorell.

While I think of it - Victorian death cert should say how long the person lived in Victoria.  This way you can find out when the OMalleys' arrived.  Only a couple of new things;

Elizth Helena OMALLEY died 1911 Carl N age 28
father Templer Edwd
mother Emma GOREY
reg 8175

Honora OMALLEY
died 1909 C Hill age 3
father omalley Edwd
mother Helena Elizth TEMPLER
reg sorry forgot to write it down :-[

Honorah Helena OMALLEY
died 1912 Richmond age 29
father Hanley Timothy
mother Margt HYNES
reg 7452

and finally
Edward OMALLEY
died 1941 Coburg age 77
father omalley Jas
mother Honoria OBRIEN
reg 8350

Good luck - must go, fish and chips are getting cold ;)

Thanks Betty,

I also found these entries and others for Brown families of Maidstone - so many infact that, along with census entries for Brown's born in Maidstone, I ended up in a right mess.  I have bought the CD for Maidstone parish reg and when it arrives I'm hoping I can sort the Brown families of Maidstone out more clearly.

Browns and Smiths ::)

With appreciation for your help,
Mo

Thanks David :D  You've really brought out his features.  I think it would be worth showing my Gran now on the very slim off chance she might recognize him.

Kent / John Brown of Maidstone - Can anyone claim him?
« on: Thursday 15 April 10 11:02 BST (UK)  »
My dubious ancestor, John Brown, claimed he was a native of Maidstone when he was arrested, tried and found guilty of house breaking at Challock in 1822 (with a Joseph Britter).  He also claimed to be 20, so born about 1802/1803 or there abouts.  No idea of parent's names.

Whilst he was sentenced to death, he was repreived and sent to Tasmania, where he eventually married and had lots of children, who had lots of children and so on until present day when his many descendents have no idea whether he was really a native of Maidstone or not.

I thought I could perhaps sort the Brown families of Maidstone from around that time - Ha ::) ::)
Now I ask instead whether anyone has a John Brown in their tree that matches my guy?
Possible clues/red herrings in his children's names; Edward Ailsbury, Charles Anglesay, Elizabeth Ann, James Weston, Rose Maria, Agnes, Caroline, Emily Anna, John Thomas, Mary Ann, Jane and Dryden.

Hoping,
Mo
