The Common Room / Signature Comparison
« on: Thursday 11 April 24 21:37 BST (UK)  »
I'm in need of some extra opinions please as I'm going round in circles with this - and have been for a few years actually, I keep coming back to it and weighing the possibility up as I want to be absolutely certain.  The first signature is from a marriage record (at roughly the right time, but in the 'wrong' place by 40 miles, though currently looks like the most likely marriage for the couple so far).

The other three signatures are from poor law records that I know he signed as an Overseer at various points.

Is the marriage signature is a good enough match for this one to conclude it was the same individual?  I think it is a really close match except for the loop of the W and the shape of the t's which bothers me.

Would welcome opinions!  Thank you :)

Essex / Chelmsford Marriage 1799 Look Up Request
« on: Thursday 18 January 24 13:46 GMT (UK)  »
I've recently found a likely marriage for my 5x great-grandparents in Chelmsford on 4th July 1799 (Sarah Baldwin and Edward Parfery).  It's thrown me a bit as both were from near Bury St Edmunds, I've been hunting for this marriage for some time but hadn't expanded my search into Essex before.  Not sure what they were doing that far south, but we already know from parish registers that Sarah's maiden name was Baldwin so it does appear to be them, and fits in with the timeline of their first child being born in 1800.

I'd love to know the details from the marriage of who witnessed it from the marriage certificate, and the residences given in the banns book if at all possible as I don't have an Essex subscription as it's not one of the counties I research in normally!

Thanks in advance for any help :)

Cambridgeshire / Newmarket Newspaper 1840
« on: Wednesday 23 August 23 14:20 BST (UK)  »
I purchased the death certificate of my ancestor's sister Susan Hurst from 1840 and found out that she was accidentally burned to death, and it was registered by the coroner.  I'd really like to find out more about this event, but I don't believe the coroner's records for Newmarket have survived.

I can't find anything about it on any newspapers currently on FindMyPast or Newspapers.com.  Could anyone please suggest which titles might cover the Newmarket area (she died in Cheveley) in 1840?  The Bury Free Press and Newmarket Journal which are good for covering this area didn't start until later.

Thank you!

The Common Room / Bedfordshire & Buckinghamshire Parish Registers
« on: Friday 18 August 23 07:59 BST (UK)  »
Out of curiosity, does anyone know if digitisation of the Bedfordshire or Buckinghamshire parish registers is in the pipeline by Ancestry, FindMyPast or anyone? I know there are some good transcriptions from the family history societies, but it’s not quite the same as the images!

The Common Room / Apprenticeship Record - Thomas Yarroll
« on: Saturday 03 June 23 08:27 BST (UK)  »
I have an ancestor Thomas Yarroll who was apprenticed in 1784 to a tailor Daniel Nicholls of Olney, Buckinghamshire (it appears in the database of county apprenticeship records on Find My Past). I’d really like to try the apprenticeship records in the hope that a parish of origin is included for Thomas. The 1851 census gives his birthplace as St Peter’s, Northamptonshire - there is a possible baptism in Kettering where the parish church was St Peter’s, but I’d like a bit more evidence to be confident in that baptism!

I’ve searched the National Archives catalogue, the Buckinghamshire record office catalogue and the Northamptonshire record office catalogue trying to find this record with no luck. Any ideas where else I could look?

Europe / Research in France - Book Recommendations
« on: Saturday 15 April 23 15:22 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone recommend a good book about researching French ancestors - written in English?  I've tentatively looked at my French line a little (my ancestor was born around 1828 in France, most likely Paris) but I don't understand the sources in the same way that I do for my English, Irish and Canadian lines, and would really like to educate myself a bit before I look at properly researching this line.  I've looked on Amazon but nothing obvious is jumping out!

Any recommendations would be gratefully received :)

Armed Forces / Service Record WWII - Finding out more about West African service
« on: Tuesday 04 April 23 09:20 BST (UK)  »
Morning all,

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction.  I've recently received my great-granddad's WWII service record, and have found that he was in the RAOC (Royal Army Ordnance Corps); I believe he did quite a lot of mechanical work and this was at the time this was transferred to the Royal Electrical and Mechnical Engineers (REME), so his service record states he initially joined RAOC but as part of the No 4 Training Batallion, but was transferred to REME W.E.1 (not sure about this, I will screenshot) on 3rd October 1942.

The two things we knew about his service were that he was posted to Africa and that he was torpedoed at some point.  So I'd really like to find out more about his service in Africa in 1943 (which looks like it only lasted a matter of months) as I presume the torpedoing event most likely took place on the journey.

Could anyone suggest what the part I have read as WE1 says or stands for, and where I might look to find more information about his service?

Thank you :)

Suffolk Lookup Requests / Sotterley Baptism Lookup Request
« on: Wednesday 02 November 22 21:31 GMT (UK)  »
I'm hoping that someone who goes to the Suffolk Record Office could possibly help me with a brief look up.

My ancestor Isabel Moore was born in 1786 (she stated in Beccles in the 1851 census).  I've been looking for a baptism for years, and recently found a likely one in the Suffolk FHS transcriptions for Sotterley (less than six miles away) on 19th September 1786 for an Isabella Deroth More.  I was hoping someone could double check this, I'm wondering whether her middle name was Deroth (which isn't consistent what I know about Isabel, although it's still possible) or whether it was an oddly transcribed 'daughter of' type annotation.

Would anyone possibly be able to help with this?  Thank you :)

Wiltshire / West Kington Marriage Records
« on: Thursday 03 February 22 11:10 GMT (UK)  »
I've only just started tracing my Wiltshire based branch of the family, so am still getting my head around which resources are where online.  My family lived in West Kington in the early 1800's and 1700's.  There's a gap on Ancestry in the parish registers for the timeframe I'm looking at, I'm trying to find marriages from the 1720's and 1730's but can't find them on Ancestry / FindMyPast / FamilySearch / FreeREG.

I've purchased the FHS transcription of baptisms and burials for West Kington, but am just struggling to locate the marriage registers anywhere.  Was just wondering if they are online anywhere that I haven't seen!

Thanks in advance for any help :)
