Armed Forces / Madras Horse Artillary

I have found a medal (looks like silver) in my Grandmothers things, with a young Queen Victoria on one side, Pegu on the bar and inscribed Gunner William Railton, Madras Horse Art, I would love to know something about him.

The only connection I know of was that my Grandmother's sister Sarah Jane, was married to a John Gordon Railton and they came from Cumberland as it was then, but as far as I knew they had no children. I have no birth years to help only this medal.

Any help would be appreciated, I am stuck. Thank you.

Wow MaxD, thank you so much for all that information, we know so little about him have no idea when or where he was born, we only new he was my husbands Grandad and his Wifes name, it went round the family that we was an orphan and went straight into the Navy as a boy.

Thank you, I don't really understand ranks, the family always said he eventually became a Lt. Commander

You said earlier he was born in Bristol, does it give any parents as we were told he was a Barnardo boy
