Ireland / How can I report an error on logainm.ie ?
« on: Friday 08 September 23 09:58 BST (UK)  »
I've found no contact information on the site, so I thought I'd ask here.

There are two adjacent Mitchelstown townlands in Condons And Clangibbon, Co. Cork divided by the River Funshion. Logainm.ie says the southern one is in Marshalstown civil parish and the northern one is in Brigown civil parish. I'm fairly sure this is the wrong way round. I've checked the OSI.ie MapGenie 6 Inch First/Last editions via their mapviewer and Marshalstown civil parish is north of the river, Brigown civil parish south.

Cork / Which Union is the Registrar's District of Kildorrery (Co Cork) in ?
« on: Tuesday 05 September 23 13:51 BST (UK)  »
From a 1931 marriage registration I have "in the Roman Catholic Church of Ballindangan in the Registrar's District of Kildorrery in the Union of Fermoy in the county of Cork"

The RC church of Ballindangan is almost certainly the Church Of The Immaculate Conception here https://www.google.com/maps/search/52.236570,-8.335787, which appears to be in Castleterry townland (checked at townlands.ie, logainm.ie, and osi.ie / webapps.geohive.ie )

johngrenham.com shows the 'place' Ballindangan to be in the Registrar's District of Kildorrery, but in the Mitchelstown Poor Law Union, not Fermoy.

So which is correct ?

(And just in case - Unions and Poor Law Unions are the same thing, aren't they ?)

Ireland / OSI GeoHive map viewer, 6" maps, what's A R P ?
« on: Friday 01 September 23 10:18 BST (UK)  »
When you look at any of the 6" maps on the OSI's map viewer ( https://webapps.geohive.ie/mapviewer/index.html ) each townland has the same three letters, A R P, below it with three numbers. These obviously mean something, but what ?

Some townlands also have  "Including # # # water" under this. What does that mean ?

(I couldn't find the answer on the OSI or GeoHive site, so I'm hoping somebody here knows)

US Completed Requests / 1950 US census - Adress 1555, but what street ?
« on: Wednesday 14 June 23 10:52 BST (UK)  »
The Street Name field on this 1950 US census record at FamilySearch is empty, so how can I find out what Street it is ?

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QHK-9QHW-P5GZ?view=index&personArk=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3A6FSP-VZK3&action=view&groupId=TH-7734-115403-22442-51

(I did try looking at a few previous pages)

US Lookup Requests / 1950 Detroit marriage of Patrick Corbett and Lucienne Fenner
« on: Saturday 10 June 23 13:51 BST (UK)  »
I was hoping to find this in FamilySearch Michigan Marriages, 1822-1995 (Name Index) https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1675359 as that collection seems to include names of both parents of both parties.

But no such luck.

I'm fairly certain that this is the Patrick born Ireland 1897 to parents Michael Corbett and Bridget Sweeney.

If anybody can confirm this it would be much appreciated

On 19 March 1926 my great uncle Patrick Corbett (30y1m, so born 1896) and his uncle Thomas Sweeney (46, so born 1879-80) set off from Southampton for the USA on SS Orduna, stating that they were joining Thomas brother, Patrick's uncle, James Sweeney at 1519 Fernand [sic] Ave, Detroit Mich.

The 1930 census record for 1519 Ferdinand Avenue, Detroit, Mich is free on FamilySearch and seems to confirm this - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GRHV-7T3?cc=1810731&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AX79B-JQ7

James Sweeney, head of household, is age 52, so born 1877-8
The second boarder at that address is Patrick Corbet, age 33 (so born 1896-7).

We know that Patrick Corbett was born 21 Sep 1897 in Mitchelstown, Co Cork
His uncle Thomas Sweeney was born  22 Feb 1880 in Mitchelstown, Co Cork
His uncle James Sweeney was born  26 Jul 1870 in Mitchelstown, Co Cork

Thomas' age fits, and Patrick's age is a bit out (one year). But the problem is that James' age is 7-8 years out, which seems a bit much.

How common is it for ages to be that far out (about 15%) on a census ?

When I started looking at family history a decade ago I created an online tree at Ancestry including all four of my grandparents. The tree grew slowly

At some point I decided to put my tree on FindMyPast too, so I downloaded a GED from Ancestry and uploaded that to FindMyPast.

However, I only tended to update my Ancestry tree.

More recently I decided to upload my tree to MyHeritage, but since they have a size limit for their free accounts I couldn't simply upload a GED from Ancestry. So I downloaded a free family tree program, Gramps, to my PC and split the downloaded Ancestry GED into four, one for each grandparent. I then exported four separate GEDs from Gramps and uploaded them to MyHeritage. I also uploaded them to Ancestry and FindMyPast.

I kept my original master tree at Ancestry just in case, but I deleted the version at FindMyPast.

My plan was to keep the four master trees in Gramps on my PC, and at appropriate points export GEDs and upload them to Ancestry and MyHeritage. But that's where my plan came unstuck.

1) It appears that you can't upload a new GED to an existing tree. When you upload a GED you create a new tree. Not a problem for myself, I can just delete the old out of date tree. But if anybody else has bookmarked (or suchlike) the older version that'll now be an error 404 page not found.

2) Each website/program seems to have its own proprietary extensions to the GED format that other websites/programs don't understand, so exporting a GED from one and importing to another leaves you prone to losing data. I found a couple of online GEDCOM validators and using a validated, proprietary-extension-free version of one of my trees checked to see what happened when I imported it into each website/program and re-exported it. The main problem for me appears to be that they all handle notes in different ways.

I'm sure that other people have had the same idea.

And similar problems ?

I've seen this a couple of times, once in England and once in the US, both mid 1900s.

Have I got the wrong couples or is this something that occasionally happens ?

Note that I haven't got the marriage certificate for either yet.

The Common Room / Anybody having Cloudfare problems accessing RootsChat ?
« on: Wednesday 24 May 23 03:08 BST (UK)  »
Is anybody else having problems accessing RootsChat because of CloudFlare ?

I've just started a discussion on the New Users forum, link below, but I think the common room is perhaps more appropriate.
