Wicklow / Completed: Marriage records around 1840
« on: Saturday 11 June 11 15:42 BST (UK)  »
My great grandmother, Ellen Colclough, was born in Co Wicklow in 1852. Her parents' names were Thomas Colclough and Eliza/Elizabeth Byrne.

I searched the new Wicklow marriage index on IFHF this morning for a marriage between Thomas and Eliza, and it does return one match, in 1840. I'm not inclined to pay 40 euros though when I only want that one record. I have tried the LDS site, but can't find the marriage.

I suspect I already know the answer to this, but is there any other way I can get the information?

Renfrewshire / COMPLETED: Likely burial place for a Bridge of Weir death
« on: Friday 27 May 11 12:24 BST (UK)  »
Thanks both of you for the information. I have now discovered that the burial took place in Kilbarchan cemetery. Renfrewshire Council are sending me a map and I will go soon to take some photos.

Very grateful for your help.

Renfrewshire / Completed: Likely burial place for a Bridge of Weir death
« on: Sunday 22 May 11 00:18 BST (UK)  »
I have recently discovered a relative who died in Bridge of Weir in 1975. I was hoping that someone on the board here with some local knowledge could point me in the direction of a likely burial place, or where I might get access to burial records.

Any responses appreciated.

Well thank you very much indeed, everybody. If scotlandspeople ever lets me back in, I hope to find out more.

I had no problem whatsoever yesterday, but it is just not happening today.

Thank you for that, Sybil. I will make sure I keep that for future reference. I knew I had seen a list like that before, but couldn't find one today, in my census excitement.  ;D

I'm thinking the institution is probably Barnhill, but I'm trying not to leap to conclusions.

Lanarkshire / COMPLETED - GROS reference help please
« on: Tuesday 05 April 11 17:43 BST (UK)  »
Today on the 1911 census, I have found a family member as an 8 year old child living in some kind of institution. He is listed as an inmate. I don't want to keep going backwards, paying as I go, until I find the address. The registration district is listed as Springburn and the GROS reference is 644//06 034/0S 014.

Is it possible to tell from the reference where this would have been? Grateful for any help.

Oh I see! I completely misunderstood which side of the road it was on. Thank you very much for putting me straight there. I will look forward to going to see it when I am next in Edinburgh.

Many thanks for your help.

Thank you all very much for your help. Too bad the premises disappeared under the St James monstr ..., ehm, Centre. Very grateful for all your links, I will be going back to have a good look at all of those sites. I hadn't realised that NLS now had directories online. I foresee hours spent going through them in the near future.

Many thanks.
