The Common Room / Re: Unmarried grandmother 1930s
« on: Tuesday 16 February 10 14:37 GMT (UK)  »
Yes, on all the birth certificates there is no father's name. She had her first child in hospital, then all the others were born at home.

She always wore a wedding ring and gave her name as 'Mrs' although all the children knew something wasn't quite right from an early age as her maiden name was the same as her married name!

I'm not sure whether to ask my uncle at the moment as he has never said anything about it before and I don't want to upset anybody with it if it does turn out they've all got different fathers. But it's probably the only option I have to find out.

The Common Room / Unmarried grandmother 1930s
« on: Tuesday 16 February 10 11:34 GMT (UK)  »
We have found out that my grandmother never married but had four children. This was in the 1930s. She was nearly 30 yrs old when she had her first child and there is four years between each child.

Whenever my mother or her siblings asked about their father she never gave a proper answer and sometimes she would get flustered by it. She did however tell them that he died when they were young.

We can't find a reason for her not to have been married, as both her sisters married, but have found out her brother had a 'wife' but was not actually married to her either.

My uncle was 12 yrs old when his youngest sister was born, so would have known if there was a father around, but he has never spoken about it to anyone. So my question is are there any specific reasons for not being able to marry, or is the likelihood that they had four different fathers?

London and Middlesex / BRENNAN/LANGTON marriage 1861 Brentford?
« on: Monday 15 February 10 10:43 GMT (UK)  »
Have been trying unsuccessfully to find the marriage of MARGARET BRENNAN (born abt 1835) and JOHN LANGTON (born abt 1838) which we think may taken place around 1861 in the Brentford area.

All their children were born in Chiswick/Ealing. We know their first child Mary Langton was born 3rd December 1861 in Chiswick. They don't appear to be in the Brentford area in the 1861 census, as they don't show up as a couple. But have had no luck locating a possible marriage.

We have checked the 1861 census for them as individuals, but can't say for sure if any of the ones we've found are the right ones. And have also checked for a marriage elsewhere in the country, mainly in the Liverpool area.

Both Margaret and John were born in Ireland, so we are wondering whether they could have married there. So any advice which way to proceed gratefully received.

Westmeath / Re: Patrick Coyne (1839-1908) - Westmeath
« on: Monday 12 October 09 15:14 BST (UK)  »
Yes, Patrick and Margaret Coyne are my great-grandparents also. Their son Christopher Joseph Coyne (2 June 1892 - 1960) was my grandfather. He moved to London and married there in 1919.

We know that Patrick and Margaret's sons John and Thomas emigrated to Canada. Most of the information we have about the Coyne side came from John Coyne's daughter Phoebe. (we knew her as Patricia Coyne - apparently she changed her name from Phoebe.)(this wouldn't be your aunt would it?)

I remember meeting her when I was quite young, as she came over to visit. My cousin asked her for the information she had researched, but we haven't managed to get back any further as yet.

« on: Saturday 05 September 09 12:48 BST (UK)  »
Has there ever been a place in Limerick called Canty? This is given as the place of birth of one of my ancestors, but am wondering whether it's just an error and meant to be County...   ???

Westmeath / Re: Patrick Coyne (1839-1908) - Westmeath

Many thanks for taking the time to look that up, I hadn't got round to checking the Griffith's Valuation yet, so it's very helpful.

I know Patrick was married in the Killucan area, so it may well be him and his father Thomas farming in that area.

Thanks again for the help.

Thank you very much for the website information for St Pancras, it's very helpful.

Yes, on the 1851 census we have Henry on, his place of birth is given as Camden Town, Middlesex.

Westmeath / COMPLETED Patrick Coyne (1839-1908) - Westmeath
« on: Saturday 29 August 09 17:01 BST (UK)  »
Am researching the family of Patrick Coyne a farmer, born 1839 in Westmeath. His parents were Thomas Coyne (1812-1892) also a farmer and mother Catherine (1809-1882.)

Would like to know of any possible siblings or information about Patrick's parents. We haven't been able to locate a marriage record for them, and assume they were married in Westmeath, possibly Heathstown.

We have a monument inscription which gives the deaths of himself and his family.

Any pointers in the direction I should go would be greatly appreciated.

Cork / Charles Calden - b.1839 Bandon, Cork
« on: Saturday 29 August 09 16:50 BST (UK)  »
Am looking for any information for Charles Calden, born in Bandon about 1839. His parents were John Calden and Johanna - who was also born in Cork (1803-1879).

His family had moved to England by 1861, where he is living in Croydon, Surrey with his mother (by this point widowed) and sister Ellen (born 1843, Bandon.)

Any help appreciated!
